He served in UNESCO for more than 25 years\, first as the Secretary of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP) than as Deputy Assistant Director General for Sciences in Paris and later as Rector of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft. Recipient of several major international awards.
