The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has committed over $1.0\u00a0billion with the goal of investing $1.5 billion over the next five years to help end plastic waste in the environment. New solutions will be developed and brought to scale that will minimize and manage plastic waste. This also includes the promotion of solutions for used plastics by helping to enable a circular economy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10573 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bcsdh.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Martin_Brudermueller-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly support the aim to reduce plastic waste in the environment,\u201d said Dr.\u00a0Martin Bruderm\u00fcller, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer of BASF SE, who supported setting up the Alliance from the beginning. \u201cWe are co-founding the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, because we want to drive and promote solutions that will effectively help solve the world\u2019s plastic waste problem,\u201d explained Bruderm\u00fcller. \u201cPlastics are efficient materials that can save resources and enable health, safety as well as convenience benefits for society. These benefits could be contradicted, if plastics and their waste are neither used nor disposed nor recycled in a responsible manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10572 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bcsdh.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ChemCycling-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Understanding where the plastic waste originates from is key. Research by the Ocean Conservancy shows that plastics in the ocean predominantly originate from litter on land. Most of the plastic waste is spread through rivers and can be traced back to ten major rivers around the world, mainly in Asia and Africa. Many of these rivers flow through densely populated areas which have a lack of adequate waste collection and recycling infrastructure, leading to significant waste leakage. The AEPW will initiate actions where they are most needed. This will include projects that contribute to solutions in four key areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Infrastructure development<\/strong> to collect and manage waste and increase recycling;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovation<\/strong> to advance and scale up new technologies that make recycling and<br \/>\nrecovering plastics easier and create value from post-use plastics;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Education and engagement<\/strong> of governments, businesses, and<br \/>\ncommunities to mobilize action; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean-up <\/strong>of concentrated areas of plastic waste in the environment, particularly the major conduits of waste, such as rivers, that carry land-based waste to the ocean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEveryone agrees that plastic waste does not belong in our oceans or anywhere in the environment. This is a complex and serious global challenge that calls for swift action and strong leadership. This new alliance is the most comprehensive effort to date to end plastic waste in the environment,\u201d said David Taylor, CEO of Procter &amp; Gamble, and chairman of the AEPW.<\/p>\n<p>The alliance is a not-for-profit organization that includes companies from across the global plastics and consumer goods value chain: chemical and plastic manufacturers, consumer goods companies, retailers, converters, and waste management companies. The alliance will work with governments, intergovernmental organizations, academia, non-government organizations and civil society to invest in joint projects to eliminate plastic waste from the environment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10575 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bcsdh.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Verbund_Site_Ludwigshafen2-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/267;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engagement of BASF in the alliance reinforces the company\u2019s engagement for a responsible handling of plastics. \u201cOne important measure to end uncontrolled entry of plastics into the environment is to build up closed circles where plastic can be used as new raw material. The chemical industry plays an important role in innovating and implementing large-scale processes to convert plastic waste into new products,\u201d said Bruderm\u00fcller. One example of how BASF is working on innovative technologies that promote the recovering and recycling of plastics is its recently initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basf.com\/global\/en\/who-we-are\/sustainability\/management-and-instruments\/circular-economy\/chemcycling.html\">ChemCycling<\/a> project. Together with its customers and partners, BASF developed and manufactured the first pilot products based on chemically recycled plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10574 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bcsdh.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Operation_Clean_Sweep-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/266;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>BASF is also actively implementing the international program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basf.com\/global\/en\/who-we-are\/sustainability\/environment\/resources-and-ecosystems\/operation-clean-sweep.html\">Operation Clean Sweep<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> globally in all its plastic pellet production sites, which aims to prevent plastic pellet loss along the value chain through behavioral, organizational and technical measures.
