Nearly 90% of the surveyed businesses plan to maintain or increase their sustainability investments over the next 12 months, while more than half of business leaders already associate ESG directly with tangible business benefits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"1148\">Across the globe, we see that sustainability initiatives are less about compliance and more about <strong data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"881\">creating business and economic value<\/strong>, becoming key drivers of competitiveness and brand strength. Mid-market leaders have recognized that ESG is not a cost but an <strong data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1022\">investment<\/strong> \u2014 one that simultaneously enhances operational efficiency, strengthens employee engagement, and opens doors to new markets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1292\">The <strong data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1208\">Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR)<\/strong> surveyed nearly 15,000 mid-market business leaders across 35 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1521\">In 2025, <strong data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1312\">41.6%<\/strong> of companies cited staying ahead of competitors and <strong data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1372\">38%<\/strong> cited reputation enhancement as their primary sustainability-related business goals \u2014 both significantly stronger motivations than a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1523\" data-end=\"1733\">The long-term business benefits are equally tangible: more than half of mid-market companies (<strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1624\">54%<\/strong>) believe sustainability increases future profitability, while <strong data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1696\">51.3%<\/strong> expect it to drive revenue growth.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1770\">Key findings from the research:<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"2102\">\n<li data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1871\">\n<p data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"1871\"><strong data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"1782\">85.9%<\/strong> of mid-market firms plan to maintain or increase sustainability investments this year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"1972\">\n<p data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1972\">Nearly half (<strong data-start=\"1887\" data-end=\"1896\">49.8%<\/strong>) say sustainability performance is key to entering international markets.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1973\" data-end=\"2102\">\n<p data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2102\">A majority (<strong data-start=\"1987\" data-end=\"1994\">54%<\/strong>) expect higher sales prices and improved profitability as a result of sustainability-related investments.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2458\">A defining strength of mid-market companies is their agility in responding to market changes. It is now clear that those who <strong data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2269\">proactively integrate sustainability<\/strong> into their business strategy gain a competitive edge. This is not only about regulatory compliance but also about meeting the expectations of <strong data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2455\">clients, investors, and employees alike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2503\">Where are the investments flowing?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2796\">The most popular area is <strong data-start=\"2529\" data-end=\"2557\">renewable energy (43.5%)<\/strong>, supported by cost-efficiency and tax considerations. At the same time, commitment to <strong data-start=\"2644\" data-end=\"2671\">diversity and inclusion<\/strong> has grown markedly: in the U.S., the proportion of mid-market firms investing in such programs rose from <strong data-start=\"2777\" data-end=\"2793\">31% to 44.8%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"3146\">In Hungary, the situation is partly similar \u2014 renewable energy continues to play a major role, while <strong data-start=\"2899\" data-end=\"2921\">climate adaptation<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"2958\">internal governance measures<\/strong> (ethical codes, whistleblowing systems, supplier due diligence) are gaining importance, particularly as the mandatory \u201ccompliance\u201d component of sustainability reporting gradually eases.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3153\" data-end=\"3197\">Reporting: a business tool, not a burden<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3522\">Despite the changing regulatory landscape \u2014 including the EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/grantthornton.hu\/en\/glossary\/csrd-corporate-sustainability-reporting-directive\">CSRD<\/a> simplifications \u2014 <strong data-start=\"3284\" data-end=\"3293\">72.9%<\/strong> of mid-market companies continue their sustainability reporting efforts. Among them, <strong data-start=\"3379\" data-end=\"3388\">44.8%<\/strong> consider transparency valuable from a business perspective, and <strong data-start=\"3453\" data-end=\"3462\">35.9%<\/strong> regard it as an integral part of their corporate mission.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3748\">Companies unable to demonstrate credible sustainability practices risk jeopardizing key business relationships. This is not merely a reputational issue \u2014 it can determine whether they remain part of critical supply chains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"4007\">It is also important to highlight the role of <strong data-start=\"3796\" data-end=\"3813\">collaboration<\/strong>: costs and complexity remain shared challenges. Working together with investors, industry peers, and clients makes it easier to develop viable and broadly applicable sustainability practices.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4014\" data-end=\"4044\">Barriers and opportunities<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4332\">The most significant barriers include <strong data-start=\"4083\" data-end=\"4100\">costs (40.9%)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4102\" data-end=\"4133\">regulatory complexity (35%)<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"4139\" data-end=\"4182\">administrative resource demands (32.3%)<\/strong>. However, businesses increasingly recognize that sustainability investments can yield <strong data-start=\"4269\" data-end=\"4286\">rapid returns<\/strong> and create long-term operational stability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4334\" data-end=\"4552\">Currently, the greatest challenge is not cost, but <strong data-start=\"4385\" data-end=\"4409\">economic uncertainty<\/strong>. The business confidence index is <strong data-start=\"4444\" data-end=\"4457\">26% lower<\/strong> than a few years ago, prompting many companies to act cautiously and scale back investments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4554\" data-end=\"4903\">At the same time, the easing of regulatory pressure has opened up new opportunities: together with our clients, we can now focus more on identifying and implementing <strong data-start=\"4720\" data-end=\"4770\">value-creating, long-term sustainable projects<\/strong>.
