CEO Guide
to the “Nature-Based Solutions and Voluntary Carbon Markets – Corporate Buyer’s Guide” publication
One hundred and forty countries worldwide have climate-neutrality targets under the
Paris Agreement. Hungary aims to achieve the latter target by 2050 at the latest.
Seventy-three per cent of leading domestic companies already have net zero
emissions goals – more than double the 31% measured in 2021. While the latter can and
should aim to meet most of their commitments in-house and primarily strive for this, in
most cases, additional means are required to meet targets fully.
Carbon neutralisation is the most common such additional instrument used by
companies. The main related field of practice is the so-called ‘voluntary carbon market’,
where the “fruits” of emission reduction projects embodied in carbon credits change hands.
Carbon offsets, including nature-based carbon credits, are likely to become more and
more popular in Hungary, too. This publication will help you get ahead of this process.
At the initiative of the Central Bank of Hungary, the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary
(BCSDH) established a working group in January 2022 called Nature-based Climate Solutions. Within this framework,
member companies and representatives of the WWF nature conservation organisation regularly review the dynamically
evolving topic of corporate carbon neutralisation, particularly nature-based options.
