Member News

On 22 November, MOL Group has signed a partnership agreement with InnoEnergy during the PowerUp! competition in Budapest. InnoEnergy is the largest European sustainable energy innovation accelerator and a world-class alliance of research institutes, universities and top European players in the energy sector.

The cooperation supports MOL Group’s ambitions to become a regional source of innovation in the energy industry. Through the partnership with InnoEnergy, MOL will be able to benefit from capabilities and a good track record of the partner in working with startups, while getting closer to meeting its long-term strategic goals. The associated partner status will enable MOL Group to get a priority access to the extensive InnoEnergy network, as well as startups offering innovative products and services.

Zsolt Winkler, Head of Open Innovation Hub at MOL Group said “The 2030 Strategy announced a year ago set MOL Group on a challenging yet exciting path. Advancements in technology and new consumer habits have fundamentally changed the entire industry, and we see embracing an open innovation culture as the right response to these challenges. Following the call for innovative startups, which we recently announced, the partnership with InnoEnergy is one of the next steps supporting our strategic goals. The cooperation will help us turn into a vital part of the European innovation ecosystem, which is undoubtedly an essential part of our journey to become the first choice of customer on the move.”

In order to boost its outreach towards the startup community, MOL Group became the main sponsor of the third edition of PowerUp!, the biggest regional competition for energy startups. We took a crucial part in selecting the winners this year, as Group Strategy and Business Development Senior Vice President György Bacsa sat on the jury and evaluated the contestants.

The application was open for participants from 23 countries in CEE, the Baltics and parts of the Mediterranean, out of which 15 best startups were selected to take part in the Grand Final in Budapest. Winners of the PowerUp! competition are invited to join InnoEnergy’s program called Highway, which offers support worth €150k to the most promising sustainable energy startups, along with three prizes of up to €20k.

Winners of the PowerUp! startup competition:

  1. HeatVentors (Hungary): Innovative thermal energy storage solution.
  2. FLASC (Malta): Energy storage device that integrates into a floating offshore platform.
  3. Via Alta (Czech Republic): New technology for the production of biofuel from biodegradable waste.

MOL Group as main sponsor, had the opportunity to give a wild card to a selected startup in the final, it was Mebius from Slovenia and develops new and more efficient hydrogen-based fuel cell system components.

COP23 – WBCSD news from Bonn

News

Decision-makers gathered in Bonn, Germany in early November for the COP23 climate conference. Through the WBCSD, over 70 companies and 200 participants were able to attend the world-renowned event. The key takeaway for business is that companies are now formally invited to provide input into the climate negotiations through reports, dialogue and analyses. WBCSD looks forward to actively engaging in this process through regional, solutions-focused multi-stakeholder meetings over the course of 2018, through to COP24. Corporations Advance the Cause of Sustainability – BCSDH Survey 2017

News

Eighty percent of leading companies already have or are presently developing a carbon reduction strategy

According to 81% of respondents, environmental responsibility is one of the most important and most practical areas in which the long-term sustainability of corporations can be demonstrated – as revealed in the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary’s (BCSDH) own, non-representative survey. The organisation –  with more than 70 corporate members who contribute 30% of Hungary’s GDP – was interested in how 110 companies that signed the Recommendation for Business Leaders evaluate their progress in taking responsibility for environmental accomplishments, and the action they have taken towards protecting the climate.

The survey reveals that while 2016 reflected an attitude of euphoria after the signing of the Paris Climate Accord – as reflected in the survey from that year – in 2017, especially after the USA pulled out, this optimistic picture became more nuanced.

“It is already quite clear that this turnaround by one of the most powerful countries in the world cannot put a stop to climate-related cooperation. This fact is also proven by the stand taken by our parent organisation, the WBCSD, which articulated its commitment to continuing its work – which we also support. High-level leaders of the largest American corporations have also reiterated their support for climate-related action, giving hope that sustainability issues will remain on the top of their list of priorities regarding their operations, and the members of the BCSDH support this.”- stated Attila Chikán Junior, President of BCSDH about the relevant points of the survey, carried out with 59 companies.

Four-fifths of all companies already have or are presently developing a carbon-reduction strategy

The practical realization of the BCSDH protocols which were created in 2016 to apply to climate protection are clearly traceable in the survey.

71% of respondents operate an environmental management system. In response to another question, 93% of corporate leaders claimed that it was important to properly measure and report carbon emissions, and 63% of all companies already have a strategy in place to reduce their carbon footprints.

This also offers hope that more leaders of domestic companies are realizing that the responsible use of natural resources and the creation of goals and measures related to this goal are similarly important.

Organizations are open to using alternative energy

Nearly half of all respondents stated that they are willing to change to using alternative energy in the future, and they have already taken steps to achieve this goal.

A further 32% responded that they already use alternative energy. This means that almost all large enterprises are undergoing a process of changing to use alternative energies. It is important to point out, however, that the uptake of alternative energy and the improvement of its composition depend very much on regulators.

People: the key to the future – The first For a Sustainable Future Prizes are presented

News

“We must invest at least as much time and as many resources in people as we do in developing technologies” – said futurist Gerd Leonhard, concluding his presentation at the BCSDH business lunch which focused on sustainable employment and hosted the award ceremony of the ‘For a Sustainable Future’ Prize that recognized outstanding management achievement.

The jubilee business lunch of the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary (BCSDH) – celebrating its 10th anniversary – hosted the award ceremony of the newly founded For a Sustainable Future Prize, and a presentation of recommendations that pave the way for the business sector to move towards a more sustainable labour market.

This is the first year that the For a Sustainable Future Prize was presented , which has three categories: Change Leader, Leading Women, and Business Solutions.

There’s no technology without humanity – speech by futurist Gerd Leonhard

“Efficiency should never become more important than humanity, because not everything that can be automated should be – and happiness cannot be automated”– said futurist Gerd Leonhard, one of the top influencers in Europe (Wired magazine, 2015) and Future Agency CEO emphasizing the role of the mankind in a digitalized society in his live video speech.
“The future is already here – but most of us haven’t noticed. We are facing exponential technological change and it’s only just the beginning. Humanity will change more in the next 20 years than in the previous 300 years. 50% of our jobs will be automated within the next 10 to 15 years. This could be heaven – or it could be hell; all depends on how we collaborate going forward.”
“Therefore, we should invest at least as much energy in people, in ourselves, as we do in technology. It will make us successful both in terms of personal and economic factors” – he added.
Gerd pointed out how digitalization, one of the key factors, influences the labour market, and also added that human skills such as emotions, emotional intelligence, intuition, imagination and creativity are essential for a deep understanding of technology.
Presentation of Gerd can be downloaded from here.

The recommendations of BCSDH for a sustainable labour market

The labour market has been changing at an accelerating pace, and there is no company in Hungary which is not affected by these changes. Ever-greater labour shortages can threaten market positions, and may become serious impediments to development. – said Attila Chikán Jr., Chairman of the organization, in a speech that introduced the recommendation of three points developed in cooperation with the leaders of BCSDH member companies that are designed to help the business sector achieve employment targets.

The recommendations of BCSDH for a sustainable labour market:

  1. Create employment systems which fit the life status of individuals
  2. Promote lifelong development
  3. Support the career paths of women

Over 70 senior executives, civil and scientific experts took part in the preparation and wording of the recommendation. As a result, solutions for both the business sector and its stakeholders were identified that might can positively impact the employment situation.
Key sponsors of this year’s programme: Alteo, Mavir, McDonald’s, MOL, Nestlé, UnileverFurther sponsors include: Folprint, Hungarocontrol, HVG, KPMG, Rossmann, SCA, Syngenta.
