WBCSD Releases New Report on Improving the Effectiveness of Non-Financial Reporting

News

In the face of unprecedented global, regional and local sustainability challenges, the need for transparent and effective non-financial reporting has never been more urgent. In partnership with Radley Yeldar, the WBCSD has conducted one of the largest independent research projects of corporate non-financial reporting, entitled Reporting Matters – WBCSD 2013 Baseline Report .

Reporting Matters, launched at the WBCSD’s Council meeting 4-8 November 2013, in Istanbul, sheds light on effective non-financial reporting practices and offers a pool of inspirational examples to stimulate the sharing of best practices. The review provides recommendations so that corporate reports can help companies create value for all stakeholders in the short, medium and long-term.

Using a set of qualitative criteria, the WBCSD conducted a review of 175 of its members’ sustainability reports to identify effective reporting practices for the benefit of WBCSD members and the wider corporate community. The research reveals that while there are many examples of outstanding reporting practice, there are also many opportunities to make reporting even more effective – often through simple quick-win actions.

“Reporting practices need to change to ensure that businesses are truly valued on what is important and that more sustainable companies get better recognized and rewarded for their performance,” said Peter Bakker, President of the WBCSD.

Reporting Matters also takes into account recent developments in reporting frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines and the recently issued draft of the Integrated Reporting Framework. Although integrated reporting is by no means the principle channel through which companies report on their non-financial performance, Reporting Matters research shows that the GRI guidelines are used by the majority of companies, and that the Integrated Reporting Framework is gaining traction.

The report also suggests that effective corporate reports are those that are engaging and meet readers’ information needs, which is why a significant part of the research in Reporting Matters focuses on report users’ experience.

“Understanding report audiences’ needs is key to effective reporting. The very best reports can act as a catalyst for change, and that’s why this research is so important in providing much needed focus on ‘how’ to report in addition to ‘what’,” said Ben Richards, Head of Sustainability at Radley Yeldar.

Among many criteria, the concept of materiality emerges as the cornerstone of effective reporting. Derived from a principle of financial reporting, materiality is used to help focus on a more strategic approach as well as to guide investment and resources allocation decisions.

Through effective reporting, the WBCSD urges companies to scale up solutions toglobal priorities identified by the WBCSD’s new Action2020 initiative, and progress towards its Vision2050ideals of true cost, true profit and true value.  The WBCSD will work with its members on ‘changing the rules of the game’ by developing tools for the integration of sustainability into risk management frameworks and valuation models, and through engagement with standard setters, the investment community and regulators.

News

14th November 2013, Budapest: on the business lunch event of Business Council of Sustainable Development in Hungary (BCSDH) new companies signed the Recommendation for business leaders on The Complex Interpretation of Corporate Sustainability . The Recommendation was introduced last year in November, when 40 CEOs of companies and business organizations signed it. Additional 38 business leaders joined the initiative on this event, so the Recommendation counts now already 80 followers.

The engagement to the Recommendation in public shows that corporates and their leaders are more and more open-minded to sustainability issues and recognize their responsibility and also long term business interest to shape their core business according the principles of the Recommendation. We also introduced our survey on the event, which summarizes the opinion and experience of 34 different business entities. The aim of the program is to introduce the complex interpretation of corporate sustainability to those talented managers who have the potential to become future business leaders, and to help them to integrate successfully the sustainability principles into their personal and business decision making processes in practice. During the program acknowledged professionals and successful practising business leaders will mentor participants to learn about ethical and transparent operations, and how to integrate successfully sustainable development’s economic, social and environmental pillar into business strategy.

The Nestlé Youth Initiative is built on four pillars. As part thereof, the company also launches school and college counselling programmes to hone young people’s job seeking skills. Skanska: Green House is Project of the Year

Member News

The prominent jury of 400 real estate professionals from Hungary and the CEE region chose the Skanska building to be the Project of 2013. The Property Investment Forum organized by Portfolio.hu was the ninth year when the real estate market assembled to discuss the main questions and future prospects of the property investment market.

“The Project of the Year title is a very honorable and important one for Skanska as it was adjudicated by those colleagues who are working in this market and have the leading role to define where our business is going. 2013 was a successful year for us. Green House reached 93% occupancy before its first anniversary. We believe that Nordic Light, our coming project on Váci Road, will be as rewarding as Green House”, Grzegorz Strutynski, Managing Director of Skanska Property Hungary, said after receiving the award.

Completed in December 2012, Green House is the greenest commercial development project on the Hungarian office market, and the first one to certify for LEED Platinum with a top score. Tenants of Green House benefit from an ideal combination of sustainability, creativity, work efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The one-phase, category “A”, standalone office development is located in the 13th district of Budapest, next to the Váci Road office corridor, and bordered by Kassák Lajos, Tüzér and Lőportár Streets and Kassák Park. The green office building was carefully planned to create ideal workspaces, while also considering the micro and macro environment. Cutting edge environmental solutions and green technologies were applied in each and every development phase to minimize the building’s environmental footprint, and reduce its energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

The building comprises approximately 20,000 sq m GBA on 7 levels above ground, providing 17,800 sq m GLA and 252 car parking spaces on 3 underground levels. Some of the already-committed tenants are Avis Budget Group, MSCI, ABB and Deichmann.

To save the island, the  company, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Hungary, Danube-Drava National Park (DDNP), the local water works DRV, national organizations for the environment and water, and the city of Mohács have joined forces.  In 2007 Coca-Cola Hungary provided financial support to launch the program, which allowed WWF Hungary to successfully submit a tender in 2008 to the EU LIFE+ Nature program. WWF was granted a subsidy of EUR 1 million by the EU, enabling the project to start up in 2008. The 5 years of the project comes to an end in 2013 and now the company can proudly announce that the island has been saved and properly restored.

Coca-Cola Hungary contributed over EUR 300,000 to the project over a period of 5 years, and also offered hundreds of hours of professional and volunteer work by its employees to help the successful completion of the project. Total budget of the project has reached EUR 1.8 million.

– securing pure, safe drinking water for the south part of Baranya county (about a million users)

– educational path created on the island
