ING strategy update: Accelerating Think Forward

Member News
  • Investment of EUR 800 million in continued digital transformation in order to further improve customer experience, accelerate growth in primary customers and lending
  • Programmes to also lead to approximately EUR 900 million annual cost savings by 2021; intended initiatives impact around 7,000 employees, mostly in Belgium and the Netherlands

‘Accelerating Think Forward’ is the theme of the strategy update that CEO Ralph Hamers and other executives presented on 3rd of October 2016  at the ING Group Investor Day in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. To accelerate the Think Forward strategy, ING will introduce a number of initiatives to further improve the customer experience, further grow primary customers and lending, and increase efficiency.

“Since launching Think Forward in 2014, we have made excellent progress on many fronts,” said Ralph Hamers, CEO of ING. “We attracted over three million new customers, supported the economy by growing lending by around EUR 56 billion and strengthened our capital. We did that by focusing on being clear and easy, anytime, anywhere, and empowering customers to stay a step ahead in life and in business. We also promised to keep getting better and that is exactly what today’s steps are aimed at. Our recent successes allow us to do so from a position of strength.”

“Customers are increasingly digital and bank with us more and more through mobile devices. Their needs and expectations are the same, all over the world, and they expect us to adopt new technology as fast as companies in other sectors. In order to continue to lead in digital banking, we need to offer a better customer experience, that’s instant, personal, frictionless and relevant. At the same time, banks are confronted with continuous regulatory burden and a prolonged period of ultra-low interest rates. These factors put pressure on the returns which are necessary to fund growth and investments, and cover our cost of capital.”

“In that context, we intend to start a path of convergence towards one digital banking platform. Countries with similar value propositions intend to harmonise their business models and develop shared operating platforms. Infrastructure, data and support functions are intended to be standardised across countries and business lines. From 2016 to 2021 we intend to invest EUR 800 million in our digital transformation, building a scalable platform to cater for continued commercial growth, an improved customer experience and a quicker delivery of new products. This would allow us to continue our success in growing our client franchise and diversify our income. Through improved efficiency, the Accelerating Think Forward programme is expected to deliver approximately EUR 900 million of annual cost savings by 2021.”

“In the Netherlands and Belgium, we intend to improve our customer experience by moving to an integrated banking platform, leveraging the combined strengths of the omnichannel capabilities of the Netherlands with the relationship model and advice capabilities of Belgium. The intended combination would leverage scale advantages of our 11 million customer base, having one value proposition, one strategy, one set of systems, one culture and one organization – but with two legal entities and two balance sheets.”

“ING Belgium intends to transform to an omnichannel banking environment. The intention is to rationalise the network by integrating ING and Record Bank branches. At the same time, in the Netherlands, we will further optimise a number of business and support functions. The intended programme would draw on the experience gained from successful similar large-scale IT projects in the Netherlands and its adoption of the agile way of working.”

“In our Challenger Markets, we will work towards a Model Bank, with one retail strategy and a harmonised retail proposition, fully focused on increasing customer interaction. Aimed at further customer and volume growth, we will deliver a scalable business platform, initially for Spain, Italy, France, Czech Republic and Austria. The platform can be extended to additional countries, products and services. An agile, central IT services centre will develop, maintain and run all needed digital requirements. In Germany we will enhance our digital banking platform, introducing an omnichannel approach and investing in scalability to provide room for business growth and improve operational efficiency.”

“In Wholesale Banking we intend to extend our Target Operating Model (TOM) programme, further driving simplification, business growth and innovation. We intend to continue to digitalise our client offering through InsideBusiness across geographies, products and devices. Process improvement initiatives would enable us to decommission legacy IT systems, while global service centres would increasingly provide services directly to clients. Our global support functions including IT, Risk, Finance and HR also intend to roll out TOM-programmes, streamlining and standardising to enable further convergence of our operations.”

“It is inevitable that the various measures and intentions announced today may have a significant impact on many of our colleagues. It means some functions will change significantly in nature. It might mean that the location of functions will change. And it might mean that positions will no longer be there in the future. All-in-all, over the coming five years, around 7,000 functions might be impacted by these effects, including 950 positions employed by external suppliers.”

“While not all plans we present today are finalized, the intended initiatives are expected to result in a reduction of ING´s workforce in Belgium by around 3,500 FTEs and by around 2,300 FTEs in the Netherlands for the years 2016-2021. These numbers include the intended move to an integrated banking platform, with the remainder of functions affected spread over intended programmes in IT, operations, Wholesale Banking and various business support functions. At the same time, we will add colleagues in parts of our business where we expect to accelerate growth given our plans to continue to attract new customers and increase lending to support the economies we are active in.”

“Regrettably, the steps and intentions announced today would mean that a significant number of colleagues would have to leave ING. Because of the work we have done in recent years, we are able to take these intended measures from a position of strength. This enables us to do our utmost to build on our track record of helping colleagues who are affected to find new job opportunities. For the intended workforce reductions, a pre-tax redundancy provision of around EUR 1.1 billion is expected to be booked, of which EUR 1.0 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016.”

“In line with our strategy, we will be introducing ING Group financial targets for 2020. We will maintain our ING Group CET1 ratio above the prevailing fully-loaded requirement, currently 12.5%, with a leverage ratio above 4%. Our target for the cost/income ratio is 50-52%. In light of the continuing regulatory uncertainty, we are not updating our RoE target (currently 10-13% of ING Bank IFRS-EU equity), but we reiterate our intention to pay a progressive dividend over time.”

Further details of the various programmes will become available in the coming months. Wherever there is an impact on the workforce, all intended measures will be made in accordance with local regulations and will be discussed with the respective stakeholders.

Allianz Hungária – also serving to protect nature and our environment

Member News

Our company is deeply committed to fighting global climate change. As a service provider, Allianz can undoubtedly do less for the cause than product manufacturers. However, we have implemented and will continue to implement a number of measures in addition to our green headquarters to protect nature and our environment.

Opening the new, green headquarters in 2010 was a milestone even in Allianz Hungária’s long list of efforts in environmental protection. The building was designed with a number of environment-friendly considerations in mind, including the type of construction materials (recycled materials were used in lots of sections) and also the lifetime carbon footprint of the structure.

  1. A powerful insulation system including, among others, glass fibre sheets, aluminium foil backed rock wool panels and thermal insulation plaster significantly lowers the building’s energy consumption.
  2. Hot water is partially supplied by the 12 solar panels mounted on the roof of the building in an area covering 24 m2.
  3. Rainwater (also called grey water) is used to flush toilets. With the heavy rains in the rainy season, it equals 13 m3 or approx. 52 bathtubs of water a day (instead of clean tap water) that the Municipality does not have to treat, another considerable amount of energy saved.
  4. The combination of central printers, the introduction of double-sided printing and new non-paper based processes as well as the digital office solution has drastically reduced paper use. Now only one-fifth of the paper quantity of 2009 is used, i.e. the company has consumed the same amount of paper over the past five years as in the year 2009.
  5. Amounting to close to 6000 kg in 2015 alone, documents and papers generated in office work and sorted to be destroyed are stored in metal containers and destroyed by an outside business partner in a closed system and then recycled. Consequently, approx. 70 full-grown trees are saved every year. (Recycling is regulated in a contract to ensure that our partner processes materials in an environmental-friendly manner.)
  6. Used paper towels at our headquarters are collected and disposed of via the Budapest Municipal Public Services Inc. (FKF Zrt.), which in 2015 alone amounted to a total of 57 m3 of selectively collected paper waste.
  7. With selective waste collection being the norm, we also separately collect hazardous waste such as the oil used in the restaurant kitchen of the building. Depleted batteries are collected in another container that normally fills up in a year. There was even another container for dead light bulbs during the 2015 Earth Hour campaign which was filled by company employees and walk-in contributors. In addition, dead light bulbs (400 pcs) and electronic devices (100 pcs) are also selectively collected and disposed of on a regular basis.
  8. Our colleagues drink purified water to limit the number of PET bottles used and to reduce the material needs for producing mineral water. Calculating with an average 2 litre water consumption per day per person and with 1000 colleagues, we save 4000 half-litre PET bottles every day.
  9. The glass surfaces of the building provide lots of natural light; in all other premises motion detector controlled or energy saving (compact fluorescent lamps and LED) light sources are employed. Savings on electricity is further enhanced by a motion detector controlled, dynamic light switching system in the underground garage.
  10. We use natural gas heating because it produces the least amount of combustion products. The hot exhaust air is used to preheat the fresh air supply via a condensation boiler. In addition, blown, filtered and fresh air is pre-cooled and pre-heated using huge heat recovery drums to reduce the amount of electricity and natural gas consumed for heating and cooling.
  11. As a result of our energy saving efforts, 250 trees are saved in our forests and a quantity equalling 24,000 bathtubs filled with water remain clean in our rivers. A single 11 W compact fluorescent lamp now operates for 960 fewer hours (120 workdays) per year, resulting in over 3 tons of limestone and over 1 ton of coal left untouched in the mountains.
  12. Access to the building is also an important factor for a green office. The Allianz HQ is accessible via various means of public transportation and there is even a bicycle track nearby. To encourage cycling, the building houses bicycle storage, locker room and shower facilities.

In support of our environment-friendly efforts, our Company is planning to introduce additional energy efficient methods by implementing the ISO 50001 standard.

Allianz_zold_szekhaz_2

We are proud that the building has been pre-qualified as “BREEAM very good” and its “greenness” has been recognised with the Construction Industry Excellence Award (“Építőipari Nívódíj”). And we have not even mentioned the colour of the building…

Legrand amongst the best factories

Member News

On May 13, the awards were handed out to the winners of the Factory of the Year competition for the first time. Legrand Zrt. became the winner of the Best management processes category, and also earned the jury’s special award for Corporate social responsibility. At the awards ceremony, general manager László Károlyi accepted the two certificates and the award plaque on behalf of the company.

KL_dijatvetel

During the contest, announced by the publisher Professional Publishing Hungary in two rounds, the professional jury judged the work of 51 candidates, grouped in 3 sizes and 7 categories. The submitted works were evaluated by Process Solution’s team, in which 75% were based on objective data, and 25% based on personal impressions. They were not in an easy situation, since in the frame of the competition they had to compare the whole of the domestic manufacturing industries, regardless of their sector. The decisions were made by the 13 member panel of experts, after the personal auditing of the shortlisted companies.

Legrand Zrt. has made the shortlist in 3 categories (best management processes, production and employee satisfaction), based on the company’s submitted material, which is quite an outstanding achievement. At the award ceremony, the company was praised for its innovative ideas and processes, and for the results it has achieved so far. The victory in the Best management processes category proves to us, that we progress towards the fulfillment of our goals in a good direction, in addition to the supporting and innovative management approach.

Corporate social responsibility was not included as a separate category, but based on the jury’s unanimous decision a special prize was awarded for Legrand Zrt. for its activities presented in this field.

KPMG Briefing on the outcome of COP21

Member News

In an historic move, 195 countries met in Paris in December 2015 and committed to limit global warming to „well below” 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to keep it to 1,5°C. The Paris Agreement, which officially comes into force in 2020, sends a clear and unequivocal signal to the private sector: a global political intention to shift to a low carbon, and ultimately zero carbon, future. If the goal agreed in Paris is to be achieved it will require a transformation of global energy systems, transport and industrial processes over the next few decades. Businesses face both risks and opportunities in this transition since they must deliver the bulk of the necessary emissions reductions and investment.

But what will this mean for business? KPMG predicts that overall the global economy will evolve to a low carbon model, by increasing investment in clean technology and by the emergence of an international carbon market. We predict that investors will look more closely at climate-related risk and opportunity, as pressure will grow for businesses to set 2°C targets. For more details and about what businesses should focus on a post COP21 world, please read KPMG’s Briefing on the outcome of COP21.

The first machine was developed by the company in cooperation with Magnus Aircraft Zrt. The single-engine two-seat aircraft enabled both for instruction and emergency training first took off on 11 April 2016 from Kecskemét-Matkópuszta airport.  The official presentation took place a few days later, on 20 April on the opening day of the “AERO 2016” International Trade Show for General Aviation in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Dr. Frank Anton, Siemens AG’s director of the electric aircraft development division also attended the event.

“The successful maiden flight of eFusion was a true milestone in electric aviation. It can help us make pilots too aware of the practical strengths of electric drive“, Anton said.

The aircraft will serve as a flying test bed for our further battery system optimization.

“Siemens Zrt. set up its research and development division only three years ago, and one of its major projects so far has been the development of purely electric drive for eFusion. Thanks to the creativity and innovative skills of our young engineers we are on the right track to become a real competence center and to cooperate in the future in numerous projects with the parent company and our partners, including also Magnus”,  Head Siemens Zrt.’s research and development Dr. Gergely György Balázs said commenting the announcement.

The aircraft with its current net weight of 410 kg fits all sports aircraft categories (UL, LSA, VLA). This means that not only a truly versatile product has been developed for many practical uses, but eFusion created in a Siemens-MAGNUS partnership is also unique in terms of matching the criteria of several categories.

KPMG Survey on CR reporting 2015

Member News

The KPMG Survey of Corporate Responsibility Reporting is now in its 9th edition and was first published in 1993. Research is carried out by professionals in KPMG member firms and is based on publicly available information published by companies in their corporate responsibility reports, annual financial reports and websites. In the 2015 edition, the sample of the world’s 250 largest companies is based on the 2014 Fortune 500 listing. Global trends in CR reporting are based on a study of reporting from the top 100 companies by revenue in each of the 45 countries.

KPMGhir

Hungarian results show that the overall reporting levels are outstandingly high (84 of 100 biggest companies publish reports), this mainly reflects the global reporting practices of multinational corporations. Only 32% of Hungarian companies issue local reports. In the meantime, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has become the most widely used reporting standard: in 2015 63% of the reports referred to the GRI.

The global and Hungarian survey results were presented to the public by István Szabó, sustainability services manager at a business breakfast in early December.

The global study is available here.
