Dreher launches the largest ever investment program in the Hungarian beer industry

Marking its 170th anniversary, the Kőbánya-based company rolls out a HUF 100 Billion development program

A groundbreaking HUF 100 billion development program, spearheaded by Asahi Group Holdings and Asahi Europe & International, promises to fortify the longevity of Dreher Breweries. Building on previous years’ investments, this newly unveiled multi-year initiative will elevate the entire beer production process. It aims not only to augment capacity and efficiency but also to fulfill the company’s rigorous sustainability objectives.

The change in ownership and management in Hungary in 2017 marked a pivotal point in the brewery’s evolution. Aligning with Asahi’s international and European strategy, the “Dreher to Dreher” philosophy was cultivated, emphasizing premiumization and harmonizing tradition with modernity in operations, product development, and corporate culture, reminiscent of the nationalization in Hungary’s communist era in 1948. Six years of meticulous developmental efforts have solidified market positions, increased employee well-being and satisfaction, optimized corporate operations, and bolstered profitability, thereby setting the stage for future investments.

“Next year, as we celebrate the 170th anniversary of the establishment of Dreher Breweries, we are reminded that our rich historical tradition, and being a four-generation workplace is not merely a source of pride, but also a testament to the responsibility, for all a responsibility for all of us, who work for the present and future of the company,” stated Gábor Békefi, CEO of Dreher Breweries. “The confidence placed in us by Asahi Group Holdings and Asahi Europe & International, manifested through our professional and business accomplishments, enables us to undertake the most substantial investment in the Hungarian beer industry to date. Like its predecessors, the new program will remain true to the “Dreher to Dreher” philosophy, intertwining innovation with the preservation of Hungarian beer production traditions. The 170th-anniversary celebrations next year will run concurrently with the construction and modernization projects, featuring special events at the brewery’s iconic sites and its museum. The management remains dedicated to the enduring preservation of historic buildings and unique industrial assets, paralleling their commitment to preserving the Dreher museum’s brewery relics.

The first milestone: HUF 30 billion for a sustainable manufacturing chain

Beer production traditionally involves six major steps: brewing, fermentation, conditioning, filtration, pasteurization, and bottling. The investments made over the last two years, coupled with those recently announced, span several processes. Last year, as part of a HUF 4.6 billion modernization series, compressors and filtration equipment were replaced. This spring, the efficiency of pasteurization and decanting increased with the installation of one of the most advanced aluminum can lines available, at a total cost of HUF 7 billion.

From 2023 to 2026, the company’s experts will focus on the first milestone of the HUF 100 billion investment planned for the next decade, allocating a budget of around HUF 30 billion. One of the inaugural projects is the construction of a part of the new energy center to serve all departments of the plant. This center will support not only capacity growth, but also the company’s ambitious sustainability goals. During this period, the fermentation and conditioning stages in the cellars will undergo a complete renewal, involving the replacement of tanks and the introduction of new technologies, which involves the continuous development of the skills and knowledge of the company’s employees.

Compocity, the composting system for companies, on the threshold of international market entry

After almost one and a half years of product development and a pilot phase, CompoBot, a community composting solution, was launched by the Compocity team at the Planet Budapest exhibition last September. This domestic debut was followed by an international product showcase and market research tour, with prominent stops including the Web Summit in Lisbon last November, one of the EU’s largest innovation exhibitions, where it was awarded the prestigious title of “impact startup” and was featured by the EIB as one of five companies on Twitter, with its one-minute introduction receiving 99,000 views in one day.

This was followed by the CES tech conference in Las Vegas, where they were highlighted as one of the top 5 “food-tech” solutions among the startups featured at the event. After almost three weeks of partnership building in California, they have recently returned from a Middle East trade show, which was the final element of their innovation mapping before going into mass production, to get a clearer picture from their existing customers’ representatives, both at the decision and employee community level, of how to build their value proposition and what additional development they need to focus on.

In the second half of 2024, international test services will be launched. These will soon be strengthened into stable representations through a collaboration in which employee activity and commitment to sustainability will be aligned with corporate and individual steps in the same direction. Food is a resource. We use it wastefully. The preservation of this process at the end of a well-chosen moment in the cycle is an opportunity with which we can now create value, integrated in an urban environment.

Joint effort in the business sphere to support the proportional composition of leading bodies and the participation of women

On the 7th of March the Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT), the Hungarian Business Leaders Forum (HBLF) and the Institute of Directors (IoD) have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with which they support diversity in the decision-making bodies of domestic companies. Several organizations expressed their support for the initiative and joined as signatories: the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary, the French-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Hungarian Asof sociation of Executives, Joint Venture Association, the Netherlands-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce, and the Women in Energy association.

The Memorandum of Understanding is intended to promote the European Parliament’s 2022 directive in Hungary, according to which by July 2026, more than 40% of the decision-making bodies (in terms of all director positions) of large EU companies listed on the stock exchange must be filled by the underrepresented gender.

The main goal of the Memorandum of Understanding is to build a broad alliance with the participation of organizations supporting the domestic business sphere. The initiators support the joining of other organizations to the MoU—which is, ultimately, meant to raise the efficiency of the decision-making bodies of domestic companies to an even higher level—as well as commit themselves to equal opportunities and diversity, and launch programs to achieve these goals. The HBLF X Mentor Executive program prepares newly appointed board members and partners or candidates by providing mentorship and professional workshops to the participants. With a premium workshop on stock market presence, the BÉT will contribute to the program from 2024 as well. The organizations joining the initiative also offer several programs supporting the promotion of equality in a corporate setting: such as the Gender Equality in the Workplace event of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary, the Leaders in Stilettos event series of the French-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Women@DUIHK women’s network of the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Women Leaders for Society! campaign of the Hungarian Association of Executives, the diversity and equal opportunities event series of the Netherlands-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce, the mentor program and regional Gender Diversity reports of the Women in Energy association, or the efforts of the Joint Venture Association to achieve a 50-50% gender balance in the composition of board and management.

E.ON poles accommodate nests for 3000 stork pairs in Hungary

Stork nesting boxes to be installed at more than 100 sites.

E.ON is taking great effort to make its network safer for birds via an investment of hundreds of millions of forints into infrastructure that protects thems, including the installation of nesting boxes to protect storks.

Nest holders being installed on utility poles by the energy firm will help storks breed safely. This season, more than 100 new nest boxes will also be installed, most of them in Baranya, Tolna and Somogy counties. Nests which have been damaged, or collapsed during previous storms, will be demolished and rebuilt with reinforcements. On the nest supports provided by E.ON, the National Parks’ nature keepers reinforce the nest base with a flexible wicker base to make the nest attractive for the birds.

Storks like to build their nests, which can weigh several kilogrammes, up to a metre high,which poses a threat to both the birds and the power grid. With E.ON’s help, conservation experts can ensure that the birds can nest more safely, while the power supply is also maintained. Via the new nest boxes, there are now more than 3,000 nesting sites for stork pairs on E.ON’s electricity poles in Transdanubia and Pest County this year. At the largest landfill site in Pest County, a favourite feeding ground for storks, cable lines will be laid underground.

To protect storks and birds of prey, such as bloodhounds, hawks, or owls, E.ON has continued its network upgrades to ensure that elements around nests, hunting and feeding areas are bird-friendly during the autumn-winter season, as it usually does at this time of year. The use of covered insulation, long-span insulators, bird perches and wing splays allows raptors to use the posts as safe perches for stalking their prey. The energy company is also installing new nesting boxes for the saker falcon, the Bird of the Year in 2024.

The precise areas where intervention is needed to benefit birds are determined jointly by E.ON, the relevant national parks, and the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME).

Bird-friendly network projects are ongoing throughout the year, and in recent months alone E.ON has carried out such network interventions at more than 100 sites. Financed entirely by the energy company, bird protection upgrades for the 2023-24 season will cost hundreds of millions of forints within   E.ON Hungária Group’s territory.

Shell Hungary continues to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network, announcing the launch of the first six Shell Recharge electric charging points, which will be located at local Tesco parking lots, according to previous agreements.

These fast, convenient, and reliable charging stations offer electric car owners the opportunity to charge their vehicles comfortably while shopping. The Shell Recharge network starts with 36 charging points in Tesco parking lots, with continuous expansion planned over the upcoming months to achieve nationwide coverage by the end of the year, catering to all EV charging needs.

The new charging stations are already implanted in Tesco hypermarket parking lots, providing both regular and fast charging options. Customers can charge up to six vehicles simultaneously from three charging stations at each location. The AC (alternating current) normal chargers are ideal for longer parking periods, while the DC (direct current) chargers serve faster charging needs on the road or at charging stations.

Shell’s self-operated, fast, convenient, and reliable EV charging service can be easily initiated on-site in various ways. Customers can initiate ad-hoc charging with contactless payment through the payment card terminal or, after scanning the QR code displayed on the charging pillar, by providing the bank card details. Shell Hungary’s contracted fuel card partners can start charging with the Shell Hybrid fuel card, and roaming partners with their roaming service provider card through the Shell Recharge application.

ALD Automotive | LeasePlan research: the future belongs to mobility packages and electric company car

The unpredictability of the recent period also rewrote the rules on the leasing industry: although surprisingly, the rise in fuel prices only posed a minor difficulty for fleet operators, the slow arrival of new cars and the increase in rental fees caused more trouble. In addition, the number of companies that are considering switching to an electric fleet are increasing. We at ALD Automotive | LeasePlan asked more than 200 company leaders and fleet managers at our annual conference about the challenges they faced in the past year and how they see the trends of the near future in the corporate mobility market.

The biggest challenge for the majority of the companies participating in the fleet conference (58%) was the increasing monthly rental fee for new cars, and for a third of the companies, the most significant problem was the slow arrival of new cars. Surprisingly, only 5 percent of the respondents considered the fuel price increase to be the biggest recent challenge in fleet management. It is interesting that the biggest difficulty for some companies was the rethinking of vehicle benefit solutions due to home office is getting more and more frequent – this caused an issue especially for larger companies managing more than 100 cars. The emission of pollutants from traffic is also a significant problem in Hungary for which, at ALD Automotive | LeasePlan, we not only respond with climate protection and biodiversity preservation programs, but also encourage our partners through education, to implement environmental protection actions. The majority of respondents of our survey (57%) also continuously measure emissions at company level and follow an action plan to reduce them. A minority of companies have specific initiatives to offset emissions: a tree planting program works for 13 percent of the respondents, while financial support for compensation projects works for roughly 10 percent of the companies. However, a fifth of the responding companies have not yet dealt with climate protection issues at all – even though a quarter of them are companies with a company fleet of more than a hundred cars. The use of environmentally friendly mobility technologies can be an easy way to reduce corporate emissions, carbon neutrality is not yet the primary consideration when designing fleets in Hungary. According to the respondents, when choosing cars, the predictability of costs is the most important, followed by the quality of services related to the operation of the vehicle fleet. Interesting fact is that the price is only after these, in the third place. The appearance and comfort of the car comes last when a company decides to procure a vehicle.

The company leaders and fleet managers also answered what solutions they would implement in their own companies within 1-3 years, according to the current trends. Based on the answers, most managers are thinking about creating a comprehensive mobility package, which includes public transport or other micromobility and sharing services in addition to the company car, but 45 percent of them are also thinking about electrification of their fleets, which paints a positive picture regarding the future of the carbon neutrality of the fleet industry.

K&H creates animal-friendly groves in the yards of 30 schools and kindergartens

K&H, which has been focusing on sustainability for years, has further developed its highly popular K&H Cooling Groves programme and will create K&H pet-friendly groves in the backyards of 30 public schools this spring. The triple aim of the initiative is to increase green space with a variety of plants and animal habitats, promote biodiversity in the yards of public education institutions and shape children’s environmental awareness.

For years, K&H has focused on raising awareness of environmental protection through a wide range of social initiatives and on ensuring that our planet remains liveable for future generations.

Building on the K&H Cooling Groves launched in 2022, last autumn K&H launched the K&H Animal Friendly Groves competition, for which more than 300 public education institutions submitted applications. In the selected 30 schoolyards and kindergartens, the financial institution will plant plants – fruit trees, shrubs, herbs – that support biodiversity, in partnership with the 10 Million Trees Foundation. K&H’s animal-friendly groves provide habitat for different plant and animal species on an area of 100 square metres per site. Animals will also be attracted to the grove with bird boxes, feeders, ponds and hedgehog dens. This will create a varied little green oasis in the courtyards of the institutions, and children will be able to observe the animals as well as the plants’ beneficial effects.

Education is an integral part of the programme. In the 30 public education establishments selected for the programme, children will be actively involved in the creation of the grove and will also have the opportunity to take part in a playful quiz on biodiversity. In addition, the institutions will receive a lesson plan for lower and upper grades, which will help them to better understand why it is important to create harmony between people, plants and animals for sustainable development.

ALTEO receives another stock exchange recognition

On 29 February, one year after being named the issuer of the year’s highest share price increase in the premium category at one of the most prestigious awards in the Hungarian financial and capital markets, ALTEO received another prestigious award: it won the “Company with Long-term Share Price Increase” category at Best of BSE 2023.

Balázs Szécsi, Head of Capital Markets and Investor Relations at ALTEO, accepted the award at the event, which honoured the most outstanding performers and players on the Hungarian capital market. Mr. Szécsi emphasised that in addition to the economic environment, which has had a positive impact on performance, the consistent implementation of the company’s ambitious strategy of systematical adaptation to market realities and opportunities, has also contributed to the sustained rise in the share price.

He also said that this clearly positive trend for investors could be further fuelled by a number of business moments awaiting ALTEO. One of the most significant of these is the 20 MWe solar power plant being built on the outskirts of Tereske, Nógrád county. With this unit, which will be able to meet the electricity needs of more than 10,000 households per year, ALTEO will double its solar power plant portfolio and, with its ESG certification obtained two years ago, is one of Hungary’s first certified energy companies in the independent power producer, trader and utility sectors.
