World Economic Forum publication spotlights Action2020

News

Green Light, the monthly newsletter by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Governance for Sustainability, recently focused its January edition on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) new Action2020 initiative, set to be officially launched later this month at the WEF’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

The WEF’s Green Light publication highlights promising economic and environmental initiatives, and in its January edition, entitled Can business help the world become more sustainable?, Green Light describes Action2020 as, “a framework for the business community to take concrete and measurable steps toward a sustainable pathway voluntarily.”

The publication’s first section highlights the WBCSD’s Vision2050 initiative that set out three years ago to tackle how nine billion people could live well and within the boundaries of the planet. The remaining four sections of the publication focus on explaining Action2020’s nine priority areas and societal ‘Must-have’ targets, along with the business solutions that combine to provide a roadmap for achieving Vision2050’s overarching goal.

WBCSD Releases New Report on Improving the Effectiveness of Non-Financial Reporting

News

In the face of unprecedented global, regional and local sustainability challenges, the need for transparent and effective non-financial reporting has never been more urgent. In partnership with Radley Yeldar, the WBCSD has conducted one of the largest independent research projects of corporate non-financial reporting, entitled Reporting Matters – WBCSD 2013 Baseline Report .

Reporting Matters, launched at the WBCSD’s Council meeting 4-8 November 2013, in Istanbul, sheds light on effective non-financial reporting practices and offers a pool of inspirational examples to stimulate the sharing of best practices. The review provides recommendations so that corporate reports can help companies create value for all stakeholders in the short, medium and long-term.

Using a set of qualitative criteria, the WBCSD conducted a review of 175 of its members’ sustainability reports to identify effective reporting practices for the benefit of WBCSD members and the wider corporate community. The research reveals that while there are many examples of outstanding reporting practice, there are also many opportunities to make reporting even more effective – often through simple quick-win actions.

“Reporting practices need to change to ensure that businesses are truly valued on what is important and that more sustainable companies get better recognized and rewarded for their performance,” said Peter Bakker, President of the WBCSD.

Reporting Matters also takes into account recent developments in reporting frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines and the recently issued draft of the Integrated Reporting Framework. Although integrated reporting is by no means the principle channel through which companies report on their non-financial performance, Reporting Matters research shows that the GRI guidelines are used by the majority of companies, and that the Integrated Reporting Framework is gaining traction.

The report also suggests that effective corporate reports are those that are engaging and meet readers’ information needs, which is why a significant part of the research in Reporting Matters focuses on report users’ experience.

“Understanding report audiences’ needs is key to effective reporting. The very best reports can act as a catalyst for change, and that’s why this research is so important in providing much needed focus on ‘how’ to report in addition to ‘what’,” said Ben Richards, Head of Sustainability at Radley Yeldar.

Among many criteria, the concept of materiality emerges as the cornerstone of effective reporting. Derived from a principle of financial reporting, materiality is used to help focus on a more strategic approach as well as to guide investment and resources allocation decisions.

Through effective reporting, the WBCSD urges companies to scale up solutions toglobal priorities identified by the WBCSD’s new Action2020 initiative, and progress towards its Vision2050ideals of true cost, true profit and true value.  The WBCSD will work with its members on ‘changing the rules of the game’ by developing tools for the integration of sustainability into risk management frameworks and valuation models, and through engagement with standard setters, the investment community and regulators.

New companies joined the BCSDH’s Recommendation for business leaders

News

14th November 2013, Budapest: on the business lunch event of Business Council of Sustainable Development in Hungary (BCSDH) new companies signed the Recommendation for business leaders on The Complex Interpretation of Corporate Sustainability . The Recommendation was introduced last year in November, when 40 CEOs of companies and business organizations signed it. Additional 38 business leaders joined the initiative on this event, so the Recommendation counts now already 80 followers.

The engagement to the Recommendation in public shows that corporates and their leaders are more and more open-minded to sustainability issues and recognize their responsibility and also long term business interest to shape their core business according the principles of the Recommendation. We also introduced our survey on the event, which summarizes the opinion and experience of 34 different business entities. This research also outlines the above mentioned tendency as one of the main results.

The roundtable discussion of the event was about the BCSDH Future Leaders Talent Program 2014 which will start in February 2014. The program is the Hungarian adaptation of the Future Leaders program of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The aim of the program is to introduce the complex interpretation of corporate sustainability to those talented managers who have the potential to become future business leaders, and to help them to integrate successfully the sustainability principles into their personal and business decision making processes in practice. During the program acknowledged professionals and successful practising business leaders will mentor participants to learn about ethical and transparent operations, and how to integrate successfully sustainable development’s economic, social and environmental pillar into business strategy.

Sustainability is more than an option – it is core business

News

The Recommendations for Business Leaders: The Complex Interpretaion of Corporate Sustainability summarises seven key features of corporate sustainability. Several of these principles are about “putting our house in order” through reviewing basic business processes and operations. Skipping this task, some companies started by jumping into campaigning and undertaking ad hoc action which did not generate the positive feedback they expected. The results of BCSDH’s latest survey show that companies have started to reorganize these ad hoc actions into a more strategic approach and also to transform their core operations. Some people may feel that sustainable development is being held back or has even stagnated because most of these activities are invisible to external stakeholders. However, in the background, this action, which really needs a lot of resources and commitment, is continuing.

At the time of signing the Recommendations, 61% of all of the companies reported that they were focusing mainly on their Strategic approach— by now this number has increased to 82%. It is becoming more and more difficult for business leaders to create and follow a strategy of fostering sustainable development because of an unpredictable and unsteady operating environment and increasing demands for turnover and profit. Thus this will only be possible if they really integrate sustainability into their core business strategies. Good examples of how this can be done include changing product and service portfolios, creating shared value instead of maximising shareholder value, extending responsibility through the whole value chain and turning donations into social investments. Respondents reported to making the most significant effort and achieving most results in the field of Ethical and Transparent operations. All respondents reported that they have put a great deal of effort into shaping ethical behaviour in the past. 96% of them also outlined outstanding results at improving transparency within the company (for example, through internal and external reporting processes and developing internal communications).

More and more companies are saying no to corruption and bribery and have announced a zero tolerance policy for their employees. Based on the opinions of respondents, the Hungarian business sector mostly needs to focus on developing a strategic approach to sustainable development in the near future. 86% of respondents had been working hard to transfer values and principles into Responsible Management processes and corporate governance and 53% of them also stated that this would remain a priority for the future. The greatest challenge in this area is to gain the full commitment of business managers and to build sustainability-related targets into performance management and reward systems.

Most of the development that occurred happened with Cooperation with stakeholdersbut the biggest gap can still be identified here. Half of all companies say that they placed high priority on this issue last year, but this year the proportion had increased to 79%. Good examples are stakeholder engagement projects (like research and consultations, supplier programs and partnerships with NGOs). The survey also shows that Respect for human values and environmental responsibility are the most developed areas at respondent companies. Key at all companies is Health and Safety and employment practices have become more sustainable through the introduction of a typical forms of work, the employment of disabled people and measures to deal with diversity and gender issues. Environmental responsibility is demonstrated by the measuring, decreasing or neutralizing of negative emissions, complex climate change programs, zero waste operations or the increasing of recycling. Environmental responsibility also extends beyond the boundaries of companies when green issues are put into the spotlight during supply chain and logistics activities, the education of customers and consumers and green office operations.

Have we reached an important milestone in sustainable development? It seems as though we may be at a turning point: either sustainability becomes a part of strategic management or it may deleted from the agenda of the corporates. The commitment and endurance of business leaders will decide which of the two possibilities will become reality.
