At BASF we create chemistry for a sustainable future

The chemical industry is a major supplier of new technologies, materials, precursors, ideas and know-how applications. This makes the necessary basis for the industrial innovation system. We give suggestions and initiatives for new products and processes in virtually all sectors and industries. Our innovative products reach almost all areas of life: health and nutrition, housing and construction, energy production and its use. BASF deals with new technologies with due responsibility. Our innovations give initiatives for new products and processes in other sectors and industries that contribute to the overall improvement of living standards.

Energy efficiency and sustainability

BASF is the first company in the world to voluntarily compile data on their greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis. Our goal is to improve climate protection and help our customers reduce their own carbon footprint. When calculating the emissions of greenhouse gases, BASF applies the principle of product life cycle, in other words, analyzes the entire life cycle of company products. BASF not only takes into account emissions from its own domestic production facilities, but also raw materials and intermediates; including the ways of production and transport as well as the disposal of chemical products at the end of their usage. The resulting carbon footprint is the indicator that helps consumers to decide on the purchase and the usage, based on its impact on the environment.

Social responsibility at BASF
BASF is aware of this responsibility and takes an active role in shaping sustainable development in its sphere of influence. CSR is an integral part of our understanding of business, and is being increasingly integrated into our business processes. It includes the monitoring and mitigating of risks in order to support the existing commercial areas and create new ones. With this approach, we equally change the ecological, social and economic environment in the specific business activity in order to provide benefits to firms as well as to society. One of the many projects of BASF, which are allocated in Hungary is children’s laboratory “Kids’  Lab”, an interactive educational program about chemistry. The project is designed for children aged 6 to12 years to give them knowledge about chemistry and science through practical chemistry experiments. BASF Kids’ Lab gives children the opportunity to explore the world of chemistry through simple and safe chemistry experiments, which may in the future stimulate their interest in science. This is just one of many BASF activities in improving relations with local society, as well as enhancing future generations.

Skanska sells Green House in Budapest

Member News

Skanska Property Hungary has sold its internationally awarded Green House office project. The new owner of the green office building is the Hungarian open-ended property fund Torony Real Estate Investment Fund managed by Diófa Fund Management, a member of FHB Group.

Green House is Skanska’s sixth office investment in the capital city of Hungary. The 7-storey building, situated in the central 13th district of Budapest, offers 17,800 square meters of leasable office space and was completed in December 2012. Currently, 98 percent of the building is leased to well-established international tenants such as Avis Budget Group, MSCI or ABB among others.

“The transaction proves that investors have a great trust in Skanska and increasing interest in the Budapest market. We believe that our next project will perform equally successfully both among tenants and investors.” Zoltán Linczmayer, Managing Director of Skanska Property Hungary said.

Green House is another great example of Skanska’s successful office developments in the CEE region.

“There was a big interest in this A class office building from both, the international and Hungarian real estate community. We are very pleased with the fact that the project was sold to the Hungarian institution Torony Real Estate Investment Fund.” added Adrian Karczewicz, Transaction Director of Skanska CDE.

The FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards 2014 World Gold Winner and CEE Green Building awarded Green House is the only LEED Platinum certified office building in Hungary.

“We are glad to realize the transaction with Skanska, who proved to be a helpful, professional and prudent partner during the preparation and the arrangement of the deal. Also, Erste Bank, the financial partner in the acquisition, provided great help to ensure the fluency of the transaction.” Gergely Biró, Chief Executive Officer of Diofa Asset Management said. Green House development concept: the location, the efficient green operation and Skanska’s tenant-focused vision of an ideal workplace all had a share in the leasing success and the fast divestment of the project.

“We are happy to complete the first real estate acquisition of Torony Real Estate Fund’s portfolio, with a building that is currently one of the greatest office buildings of Budapest. We are especially pleased, that as a relatively new market-participant, we could realize such a significant deal in a rather challenging market environment.” Márton Oláh, Chairman of The Board of Diófa Asset Management said.

Minimized environmental impact, decreased energy consumption and CO2 emissions are just some of the great achievements of Green House. The landmark project offers a unique atmosphere, friendly working environment, a beautiful internal garden, a great variety of in-house services and proven cost-efficient green operation.

Green House Among the World’s Best Office Buildings

Member News

Skanska’s Green House was chosen to be the World Gold Winner in the office category for the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards 2014. The highest recognition was handed over by Dr. Flavio Gonzaga Nunes, the World President of FIABCI, during the 65th Fiabci World Congress and World Prix d’Excellence Awards Presentation Ceremony on the 21st of May in Luxembourg.

Green House FIABCI Award

FIABCI (The International Real Estate Federation, founded in 1945 in France) has organized Prix d’Excellence Awards annually since 1992 to recognize property projects which best embody excellence in all real estate disciplines. The award illustrates the idea of providing society with the optimal solution for property needs. Prior to the worldwide competition, Green House received two prizes at the 15th Hungarian FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Awards 2013. This result allowed the project to participate in the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards 2014 where, out of other well recognized international projects, Green House receivedthe World Gold Award.

The trophy was handed over to Zoltán Linczmayer, the managing director of Skanska Property Hungary. After receiving the award, he said: “We are very proud that Green House was selected as the World Gold Winner. This is proof that the Budapest office market offers such quality office projects which enable world class accommodation of its tenants’ requirements. After the success of Green House and the previous years’ operation, Skanska continues to develop in Budapest; the 26,200 sq m Nordic Light will offer the same proven quality and tenant-focused healthy work environment”.

The LEED Platinum certified Green House is an outstanding project which gathered a great number of prizes and recognition since its completion in December 2012. Its well established international tenants are praising the project for the unique atmosphere, friendly working environment, beautiful garden, the quality of the in-house services and the proven cost efficient green operation. Besides DPI Design, a Hungarian architectural group led by Tamás Pintér, the plans of the project were created by the Swedish architects of White Arkitekter AB Asa Haremst and Anders Svennington. The almost 100%-let building offers a total of 17,800 sq m leasable office area in the heart of the 13th district of Budapest.

E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods in Hungary

Member News

GreenDependent Institute has concluded its energy saving competition for households and communities, sponsored by E.ON Hungary. The objectives of the programme were to increase the energy efficiency of households and to promote low carbon lifestyles. The organisers’ aim was to highlight the fact that we can save energy – and thus money – with no investment through changing our everyday behaviour  and a climate-friendly lifestyle can be achieved by anyone, and trying to achieve itcan be an efficient community building tool.

The award ceremony of the E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods energy saving competition was held on 14 June 2014 in Budapest organised by GreenDependent Institute. EnergyNeighbourhoods are small groups or communities of 5-8 households saving energy together.

During the six months long competition that promoted ‘smaller carbon footprint’ lifestyles for communities and households, participants had to read their meters (electricity, gas, other heating sources, and water) every month and record it in the online calculator, and had to complete four creative tasks. In the first one they were asked to map their own energy consumption habits and draw up an energy saving plan for both their household and community (or ‘neighbourhood’). After this they had to put together an energy fast or plan a climate-conscious Easter party. Next, the mobility habits of members had to be considered, and finally a board game, a song or some other type of motivational tool was created by communities to help persuade others to lead more energy-efficient lifestyles.

The best performing communities (saving the most and creating the best tasks) reported on their efforts and results at the award ceremony and received their awards that will help them achieve more savings and lead low-carbon lifestyles. The winner group from Egyházasfalu saved an average of 34.6% energy compared to their consumption a year before, while the group coming second from Környe saved 11.2% and the third team from Győr saved 6.6%.

Adult Climate Coordinators and young Energy Hunters all over the country managed and helped the members of the small groups, or EnergyNeighbourhoods, to support each other and to find the best ways to save energy at home.

The organisers paid special attention to keep the carbon footprint of the programme’s events (trainings and the award ceremony) as low as possible. Thus, they arranged for organic, local, fair trade and vegetarian catering, had the events at places that could be reached by public transport or bicycle, and used as little energy as possible. To offset the carbon footprint, 130 native fruit trees will be planted. The fruit trees were purchased from a nursery specializing in saving the genes of native fruit trees.

The presentations as well as the detailed report on the award ceremony with photos, and the best creative tasks of the competition can be found at the project website: www.energiakozossegek.hu.

Dr. Marcel Szabó, Deputy-Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Ombudsman for Future Generations, as patron of the competition greeted the winners and the participants and highlighted the fact that there is no need to give up the important moments of our lives, the solutions and ideas from the EnergyNeighbourhoods help us all realise that by being attentive we can do much to save the environment. Meanwhile our life can be enriched with intellectual and spiritual values, and our overheads reduced.

“Future Leaders” Talent Program- half way through the journey

News

BCSDH’s ”Future Leaders” talent program (which was launched in February) has arrived at its second half. Participants of the first BCSDH talent program are 23 talented professionals from BCSDH’s member companies, nominated by their leaders, who with full confidence and respect we can consider the future generation of leaders.

The aim of the programme is to help potential business leaders, who are currently talented professionals, to understand the complexity of corporate sustainability and to enable them to incorporate sustainability elements into their future decision-making processes.

This program is unique in Hungary as participants are on a 9 month-long “learning journey” with a diverse group of practicing business leaders and professionals. Every and each professional day is hosted by one of our mentor companies – which also offers participants an opportunity to get to know these 8 companies well.  BCSDH A jövõ vezetõi tehetségprogram 2014 Megnyitó 2014.02.26.

2014-05-15 16.21.39The first day, which was hosted by Siemens, was about getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the theoretical framework of sustainability. The day finished with an interview with Martin A. Dale, CEO of Siemens, and a walk-through of Siemens’ turbine factory. During the next occasion (which took place at a Grundfos factory in Tatabanya), the topic of taking a strategic approach was under the light spot. The mentors of this topic were also two top leaders – Michael Nixon from Nestle and László Török from Grundfos (both Managing Directors). The topic of Responsible Management topic was elaborated with the precious help of MOL and Coca-Cola. Once again, apart from the professional materials that were supplied, an important role was played by the personal meetings – this time with György Mosonyi, President of the Supervisory Board of MOL and former CEO of MOL, and Managing Director of Coca-Cola, Nikos Kalaitzidakis. In the “Telenor Ház” we talked about Ethical Operations with senior managers and professionals from the CEU Business School, Trancparency, Telenor and BEM. For our next topic (which will be respect for basic human values), Zwack Unicum is hosting the program as a symbolical representative and will close the event in an informal manner with a liqueur tasting at which it will announce the project topics that the participants will work on during their “summer break”.

Resource Efficiency – Worth Investing In – Green Week 2014 Satellite Event

News

Resource efficiency aiming for absolute resource use reduction means using the Earth’s limited resources in a sustainable manner while minimising impacts on the environment. It allows us to create more with less and to deliver greater value with less input. A recent survey, entitled “Towards the circular economy”[1]reveals the economic benefits of efforts towards enhancing resource efficiency. Another report[2] says that 87% of consumers surveyed worldwide want companies to adopt sourcing policies that respect biodiversity. Proper resource efficiency practices aiming for absolute resource use reduction can benefit also biological diversity. Resource scarcity, tighter environmental standards as well as increase consumer awareness are here to stay and will reward businesses that shift away from the “take, make and dispose” approach.

CEEweb for Biodiversity has been a trail-blazer in Central and Eastern Europe in formulating and advocating for effective resource use policies as well as in building up the CEE business and biodiversity platform. CEEweb for Biodiversity now organizes the multi-stakeholder professional input for the EU Green Week Satellite Event in Budapest and brings together experts from the European Union, business leaders as well as NGOs to discuss the main topic of the 2014 Green Week, which focuses on Circular Economy, Resource Efficiency & Waste.
