New opening hours and further preventive measures at SPAR

Member News
SPAR and INTERSPAR stores are open from Monday to Friday averagely between 6:30 and 19 o’clock, on Saturday and Sunday the opening hours differ by each store henceforward, in the meantime measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus continue further.

SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft. reconstituted the opening hours on all of their domestic SPAR and INTERSPAR stores concerning the state of emergency and the changes in customer habits. The store units are open from Monday to Friday averagely between 6:30 and 19 o’clock, on Saturday and Sunday the opening hours differ by each stores henceforward. The current opening hours are available on the SPAR website listed by each store: https://www.spar.hu/nyitvatartas-valtozas

Webshop – without cash flow

SPAR modified the operation of webshop as well regarding the current situation. From 17.03.2020 payment for the placed orders is possible now only in advance online. With this step, SPAR would like to decrease the time of personal contact between delivery staff and customers. The decision do not apply for the previously placed orders, the payment of those is carried out by the option determined by the customer earlier. SPAR asks the webshop customers to give information beforehand during ordering, if they request delivery to restricted area because of health reasons, as SPAR colleagues are not allowed to enter into endangered area.
Important news is that from 30.03.2020 SPAR Online Shop, as reacting to the increased order numbers, extends the available time slots. On weekdays, a new time slot becomes available which enables delivery between 22 and 23 o’clock.

Quantitative restrictions entered into force

Regarding the state of emergency ordered by the Hungarian Government, SPAR has taken many extraordinary measures in order to that the supply of food to the population can remain continuous and balanced. SPAR asks for patience and cooperation from its customers in relation to the introduced quantitative restrictions, thus also helping the issue that everybody can get to sufficient food. Concerning the shoppings at the webshop and in stores:
· in case of products in bulk 5 kg/product,
· in case of products sold in pieces 10 pieces/product is the quantity limit per person.

„SPAR cooperating together with its suppliers similar to the recent weeks makes every effort to be able to treat the increased demands. However, it may occur that for shorter periods in some stores the refilling time of certain products because of time required for product supplement can be longer than as usual, therefore we asks for the understanding of our customers. SPAR strongly recommends to the population not to pile up unnecessarily much food at home!” – said Márk Maczelka, Head of Communication at SPAR.

Facilitation in case of contactless payments

During the epidemological state of emergency in the interest of easier and faster payments, in case of contactless card payments the 5000 HUF limit on compulsory use of PIN-code is modified to 15 000 HUF from today. According to this, at payments over 15 000 HUF asks only the credit card terminal the PIN code in the SPAR stores as well. SPAR would like to call the attention to that if the number of successive contactless payments reaches 5 or their amount reaches 150 EUR, the bank that issued the card is obliged to identify the customer, for example by asking the PIN code. Thus it may occasionally happen that the terminal authorizes the payment transactions below the 15 000 HUF limit only by giving the PIN code.

Loyalty reward to the employees

In the last few weeks, SPAR employees testified their high level of commitment and dedication to work, which is rewarded by a new benefit from the store chain. According to the regulation that remains valid until withdrawal, SPAR accounts gross 400 HUF loyalty reward after all hours worked to employees working in the stores, in the field of logistics and in food production plants, which is transferred to the bank accounts together with the monthly salary. The reward is granted from day of entry to day of exit on each hour actually worked by the employee beginning from 16th March 2020 until withdrawal. As coronavirus poses high risk to elderly people, from 18th March 2020, SPAR exempts from work its 65-year-old and older employees including those, who reach the age of 65 this year. For the period of measure taken to health protection, SPAR colleagues exempted from work temporarily are entitled to a remuneration suitable for the legislative provision.

Safety of customers and colleagues

SPAR pays special attention also to the safety of its employees and takes every expected measure in the future as well. In the interest of helping the work of employees, SPAR increased
the flexibility of taking breaks to ensure the possibility to wash hands more frequently. SPAR provided to all of their employees gloves and disinfectants and started to settle the plexiglass against breath at the cashdesks that serves the security of both customers and colleagues. Placement of floor stickers has also started that helps to keep distance between each other within the store.

For SPAR, the convenience and safety of customers is highly important and it takes every expected measure not only now, but also in the future. SPAR increased the quantity of their orders on own disinfectants and detergents, and cleaning continues to be extremely thorough in the stores.

SPAR asks their customers countrywide for the followings:
– Pay attention also during shopping to the general recommendations of National Public Health Centre, according to which being in the retail stores the customers do not touch their faces with their hand, especially the lips, nose and eyes!
– Please, follow the hygienic protocol of coughing and breathing! In case of coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with one of your elbows or with a handkerchief, then threw the handkerchief into a closed dustbin as soon as possible! Do not cough or sneeze onto the people being in the stores or onto the placed food products or other products!
– We recommend you not to come to shopping in the peak period!
– We suggest to shop alone!
– Do not take the children with you to shopping as possible!

SPAR helps with even more sandwiches the hard work of people in the hospitals within the civil initiative Feed the Doctor!. Furthermore based on the call for proposal of UNICEF Magyarország, the company provides financial support and sandwiches to children living in child protection care and people working in the child protection system.

„We are so grateful for the workers in the Hungarian health care who perform heroic work day by day during the coronavirus epidemic. We noticed that they need additional help, therefore we extends the Feed the Doctor! initiative and contribute with further 2.000 sandwiches to the catering of doctors and nurses working in hospitals of the capital city. However besides the health care sector, another group being in a particularly endangered situation also needs attention. SPAR has also joined to the call for proposal of UNICEF Magyarország that tries to help those children concerned the most vulnerable in the coronavirus epidemic who cannot rely on anyone else. We support them in our way as well because children living in child protection care are those, who are the most defenseless against the epidemic and the crisis connected to it” – said Márk Maczelka, head of communication at SPAR.

Besides health care, people working in the child protection sector received little attention, although they are also working hard. The work of UNICEF Magyarország is exemplary that strives for helping the child protection institutional system and the underprivileged, sick children in difficult situation during the epidemic. The new service of SPAR and Főtaxi Group, TAXI SHOPPING starts on 6th April. In the epidemic period caused by the coronavirus, during the curfew restrictions affecting everyone, shopping became difficult for many people. The new service of SPAR and Főtaxi Group, which is based on SPAR online shop, tries to help for these people.

„Cooperation is the only way in this current epidemiological and economic situation. The mission of SPAR is to supply the population with food: our colleagues perform beyond their strength day by day nationwide. TAXI SHOPPING, that is a common service with Főtaxi Group, is based on SPAR online shop. It was developed in order to offer new alternatives to our customers for delivery, if they do not have the opportunity or would not like to move out of home, or possibly they arrange the shopping instead of their elder or sick relatives” – said Márk Maczelka, head of communication at SPAR.

The convenience service is easily available from 6th April 2020. On the website www.spar.hu/onlineshop, the delivery in person option shall be selected, then choose a free time slot appropriate for the customer. Thereafter, the desired products shall be taken into the basket as usual and pay for the order by credit card. After ordering becomes it possible to call one of the phone numbers of Főtaxi Group (in case of Főtaxi: +36 1/20/30/70 2 222 222, in case of Budapest Taxi: + 36 1/20/30/70 7 777 777). „In these days, the sustainable operation has gained new meaning for every business operator. During our passenger transport service, we strive to serve our passengers at the highest level. Now, we are entering to a new territory but I am sure that the quality and reliability connected to the name of Főtaxi also prevail in the cooperation with the SPAR store chain, to which the biggest fleet of the country provides stable background” – said Zsolt Angyal, CEO of Főtaxi.

Healthy people, healthy planet. Our future depends on sustainable food systems

News

While right now the key factor is the survival of the supply chain, after overcoming the pandemic it will also be necessary to address the challenge of sustainable food systems, which play an essential role in maintaining the health of people and the planet – highlighted Diane Holdorf on 1 April, 2020 during BCSDH’s virtual business breakfast and Action 2020 Forum that focused on food and biodiversity, with close 100 participants.

Diane Holdorf, Managing Director of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Food and Nature program, delivered a highly successful and thoughtful presentation at the Business Council for Sustainable Development in Hungary’s (BCSDH) Virtual Business Breakfast and Action 2020 Forum. The business breakfast of the organization, which has 92 member companies responsible for 30% of Hungarian GDP, was followed by a workshop with company executives and experts. This served the purpose of helping the business sector to take real steps forward in the area of food sustainability and biodiversity.

In his opening remarks, Attila Chikán Jr., President of BCSDH, emphasized: “In the field of sustainable development, we often say that business as usual is no longer viable and cannot be allowed to continue. Now the world has turned on its head because of coronavirus. Business is anything but ordinary. While some sustainability aspirations are being neglected, it is our common responsibility to develop new impetus for climate protection and to create a sustainable world once our current problems are solved. Thus the professional work continues at BCSDH.”

Agriculture is estimated to be responsible for 23% of GHG emissions, as well as around 80% of deforestation and 70% of freshwater use worldwide. Hungary has one of the largest proportions of  obese people in Europe, and produces about 1.8 million tons of food waste each year, about a quarter of which comes from households. Around 46% of Hungary’s total area is arable land, about 60% of which is threatened by soil degradation, and has very low ecosystem service capacity and biodiversity.

“We are living in challenging times, and the pace of change has accelerated. Our future depends on our ability to create a system that supports healthy people and a healthy planet. We have been able to produce a great amount of food for the world’s population, and there are already solutions that allow us to feed the growing population. But our current systems make demands that go way beyond the resources of our planet” – explained Diane Holdorf.

The business breakfast was followed by a virtual Action 2020 Professional Forum, the primary purpose of which was to initiate joint thinking and work in the business sector that will make a real impact. A total of 60 corporate executives, professionals, academic and civilian experts participated in four groups at the forum. Sixty companies have already joined the program.

The main objective of the Action 2020 Hungary program is to promote the creation of a sustainable, safe, and local food production and supply system, which can provide everyone with a healthy, balanced diet, while also restoring and preserving biodiversity.
