Almost 2 tonnes of waste were collected by employees of Coca‑Cola Hungary on the upper section of the River Tisza

The Tisza and the Tisza Lake have astonishing natural assets beloved by many Hungarian and foreign tourists as a holiday resort and fishing spot. However, a large amount of driftwood, organic material and communal waste are washed down here most of them originating from Ukraine and Romania. The Kisköre Dam is the first facility in the Hungarian section of the river which can stop the flood of waste thus protecting the lower sections.

This problem needs joint efforts to be tackled effectively. Water management authorities, civilian and industry players – the National Directorate General for Water Management, Plastic Cup and Coca‑Cola Hungary – announced jointly in the summer of 2019 that they were prepared to manage the challenge collectively.

Plastic Cup has held waste collecting activities on the Upper Tisza for years, which the Coca‑Cola joined so that they could help manage the situation with a financial support of HUF 73 million provided by the global foundation of the company and its employees’ volunteer work. Therefore, the program Zero Waste Tisza was launched this summer aimed at providing a constant protection, waste collection and recycling – namely cleaning up the river in an increasing proportion.

In the first action in this summer, 70 volunteers of the company collected a total of 1.5 tonnes of waste assisted by Plastic Cup. This time, to join the second activity, almost 100 employees of Coca‑Cola Hungary showed up in the vicinity of Kisköre and Dinnyéshát on the 27th of September. By this means, they supported the objectives of the World Cleanup Day which took place on 21st of September.

 

The outcome of the second action surpassed that of the first one: this time 170 bags of waste corresponding to 1.8 tonnes had been removed from the Tisza. Among the waste collected communal waste, glasses, metals and objects made of PET could be found. Most of them had been sorted out based on their type at the spot.

Revived for an energy efficient future

Two new solar power plants have been launched at ALTEO

The construction work was completed at ALTEO’s solar power plants on the outskirts of Nagykőrös and in Balatonberény, so following the handover, two more power plants were included in the energy portfolio of the listed company. ALTEO has four self-constructed solar power plants, including the self-constructed power plants in Monor and Domaszék. The company’s solar power projects are now rated at 20 megawatts and the full portfolio of renewable energy sources reaches 55 megawatts.

Driver Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky is test driver for Continental’s Extreme E tyres

Swede Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky is the test driver for Continental’s new high-performance tyres being developed for the Extreme E rally series.

Last year she became the only woman to date to win one of the races in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship. Driving this year for the PWR Racing team, she has already taken pole position in the first race of the season with a victory to her credit. Åhlin-Kottulinsky was born into a successful Swedish motorsport family.

She says, “This is a great project, I’m really happy to drive the electrically-powered SUV prototypes and hope to raise awareness on the climate change being made all over the world.

I’m really looking forward to being a test driver for the Extreme E tyres from Continental. You can follow the individual steps of development and the test drives on the internet. It’s going to be an extraordinarily thrilling journey until the first races of the Extreme E series.”

Our first integrated report has been published which includes our sustainability report in addition to the financial results of 2018. The aim of the integrated report is to provide a comprehensive picture of our operation by presenting the most important results of our environmental and social activity beyond the key financial indicators.

As one of the representatives of impact investment in Hungary, we aim from the beginning to operate as an environmentally and socially sustainable and responsible company in addition to financial success.  Hence, we have decided to – based on international trends – publish our financial results and efforts made in terms of sustainability in an integrated report this year.

The capacity of ALTEO’s portfolio of renewable energy sources has nearly doubled

ALTEO has expanded its portfolio of renewable energy sources with a wind farm consisting of 13 turbines, with a total power of 25 megawatts. Due to this acquisition, ALTEO now has four wind power plants, and its renewable energy portfolio has a capacity of over 55 megawatts.

As a result of the latest acquisition, the group will have a wind farm of 13 turbines, and 25-megawatt total power in Bőny. With the purchase of the wind farm, the company almost doubled the capacity of its renewable energy portfolio.

The company has significant experience in the profitable operation of power plants using renewable energy sources, as apart from the wind farm, the company’s portfolio includes wind turbines in Ács, Jánossomorja, Pápakovácsi, and Törökszentmiklós as well.

There is a great emphasis on power plants that are using renewable energy sources: the company has wind, hydroelectric as well as solar power plant. The capacity of the wind farm, the ongoing solar power plant project, as well as other renewable energy power plants owned by ALTEO, are expected to exceed 55 megawatts in total.

Record number of participants in Coca-Cola Hungary’s #YouthEmpowered program

Over 5500 people have participated during the last 1,5 years in Coca-Cola Hungary’s #YouthEmpowered program, which aims to enhance the chances of young people in the labour market. The program, which offers free trainings for NEET youth, disadvantaged groups, young moms and expectant mothers, and people with disabilities, have gained over 4700 online participants until the middle of May. The program’s in person, day-long trainings have been attended by over 800 people since the start of the program in 2017.

Initiated by Coca-Cola HBC Hungary in the fall of 2017, #YouthEmpowered program aims to enhance the chances of young people between 18-30 in the labour market. Since spring, this year The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola HBC Hungary are cooperating on the program, organising free trainings and events all year round. The program, which is set to reach its goal in 2020, offers free online and in-person trainings for job-seeking youth, who are currently not in education, nor in employment. During the last 1,5 years, the program has already reached over 30 locations of the country, with over 4700 registered participants for the online trainings, and over 800 participants in the in-person trainings and events, 200 of which being young mothers.

The program works closely together with several associations, training centers and foundations, operating with over 10 professional trainers and coaches, in order to engage the target groups in the most suitable way. Diversitas Center and Civitas Association organise trainings for disadvantaged groups and NEET youth on the countryside, Coworkid Foundation and Loffice coworking work together with #YouthEmpowered to reach young women and parents from Budapest.

Both the online trainings available at www.enjovom.hu, and the in-person, day-long trainings proved to be especially popular among young women and mothers from Budapest. To complement the trainings of this target group, the program organises workshops and roundtable discussions as well, where they can learn about self-knowledge, communication and entrepreneurship.  The next such event is going to be organised together with Loffice Coworkid, on the 4th of June. During this event, participants of the workshops will learn about kick-starting their own business, building social media, as well as about the legal background of a new venture.

Plans of #YouthEmpowered for the second part of this year include reaching new target groups, organising trainings at new locations and cooperating with new partners as well. Together with Salva Vita Foundation, the program will organise new trainings for the disabled, while it will also initiate trainings and events for university students from Budapest.

Less is more, especially from plastic

Our Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) has determined our business decisions in the past 9 years. Launched in 2010, it is creating sustainable growth ever since through our purpose-led brands. Over the past few years we were focusing mainly on the packaging of our products and their impact on the environment. We have been continuously reducing the plastic in our packaging as we are working on innovations with less plastic, better plastic or no plastic at all.

 

Globally, more and more brands are switching to eco-friendly packaging and the number is increasing. For example, Signal overseas has created a natural solution to the 3.5 billion unrecyclable plastic toothbrushes sold each year; a brand new range of toothbrushes made from a 100% natural bamboo handle the kind that panda’s don’t like! – and cardboard packaging for a more environmentally friendly world.

 

In Hungary as well as in East-Central Europe, we aim to introduce these innovations to the local market at the earliest possible. Since December 2018 one of our favorite brands, the Coccolino intense fabric softener’s packaging is made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR). Moreover, not only the material of the packaging is different, but the size is also smaller thanks to the super-concentrated softener inside. Therefore, it is not only made of better but also less plastic.

 

Love Beauty and Planet and Seventh Generation products are both committed to the recycled and recyclable packaging, their bottles are made from 100% PCR material and are recyclable. Their decisions are driven by their purpose which leads them to cause less harm possible for the next generations in our planet.

Henkel drives further progress in sustainability

Düsseldorf – Henkel continued to make progress in implementing its sustainability strategy last year. Plastic was one of the key focus topics, with the company pursuing ambitious targets for packaging to drive progress toward the development of a sustainable, circular economy. 

“Sustainability has been a top priority for Henkel for a long time. Today is the 28th time that we are reporting the progress we have made on our path of reducing resource consumption while also creating more value. We have been able to successfully drive many projects, initiatives and activities forward, supported by excellent collaboration with our partners,” said Kathrin Menges, Executive Vice President Human Resources and Chair of Henkel’s Sustainability Council. 

 

Creating sustainable value 

To contribute to sustainable development, Henkel wants to create more value for its customers and consumers, for the communities it operates in and for the company itself by 2030 – while reducing its environmental footprint at the same time. In this context, Henkel is actively supporting the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted by the United Nations in 2015. 

Last year, Henkel achieved the following results related to its interim targets for 2020 (base year 2010):  

  • Less CO2 emissions per ton of product: -25 percent 
  • Less waste per ton of product: -29 percent 
  • Less water per ton of product: -24 percent 
  • More net sales per ton of product: +6 percent 
  • Safer per million hours worked: +17 percent 

Overall, the company has increased its total efficiency by 43 percent compared to the base year 2010 – supported by activities in every region around the world. Henkel aims to increase its resource efficiency by 75 percent by 2020. 

 

Active contribution to climate protection  

Against the backdrop of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Henkel wants to make an active contribution to the goal of limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius. The company’s initial efforts will focus on reducing the CO2 footprint of its own production by 75 percent by the year 2030. Henkel is also striving to source 100 percent of the electricity it uses in production from renewable sources by 2030. At the same time, the company wants to leverage the potential of its brands and technologies: Henkel has the goal of helping its customers and consumers save 50 million metric tons of CO2 by 2020. 

 

Commitment to sustainable packaging and the circular economy 

With regard to packaging development, Henkel focuses on reducing and reusing packaging material, as well as increasing the use of recycled materials. As part of its new packaging strategy, the company has set itself the target of making 100 percent of its packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025 – this had been achieved for more than 80 percent of its packaging by the end of 2018. Henkel also wants to use 35 percent recycled plastic for the packaging of its consumer goods products in Europe by 2025. At the end of 2018, it had achieved this for almost 10 percent. 

Henkel is working together with partners along the entire value chain to drive progress toward a circular economy. One example is the partnership with Plastic Bank – a social enterprise that aims to stop plastic waste in the oceans and provide opportunities for people in poverty at the same time. At three collection centers in Haiti that have been built as part of the cooperation with Henkel, a total of around 63 metric tons of plastic has already been collected, sorted and subsequently introduced into the recycling value chain. Henkel has already used this Social Plastic® in 25,000 laundry detergent and household cleaning bottles. The company is continuing its commitment in the current year: Henkel is a founding member of the global Alliance to End Plastic Waste.  

 

50,000 employees are Sustainability Ambassadors  

“The commitment of our employees worldwide is a decisive factor in Henkel’s successful development in the area of sustainability,” said Kathrin Menges. “Around 50,000 of our employees have completed a training course to become a Sustainability Ambassador in the past few years. They use their knowledge in dialog with colleagues and customers, as well as in a range of projects across communities, schools and universities.” 

 

Leading position in indices and ratings confirmed 

Henkel’s sustainability performance was once again confirmed by independent experts, rating agencies and capital markets in 2018. The company was included in the FTSE4Good ethical index for the 18th consecutive year and was listed in several further indices (ECPI Index, Ethibel Sustainability Indices, Euronext Vigeo Eiris Indices, Global Challenges Index, MSCI ESG Leaders and SRI Indices, as well as STOXX Global ESG Leaders Indices). Henkel was recognized as a leader in its sector in the EcoVadis, Oekom Research and Sustainalytics ratings. In 2018, Henkel also became the first German company to conclude a “green loan”, which is a credit facility with a volume of up to 1.5 billion euros with terms linked to its sustainability performance.
