E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods in Hungary

Member News

GreenDependent Institute has concluded its energy saving competition for households and communities, sponsored by E.ON Hungary. The objectives of the programme were to increase the energy efficiency of households and to promote low carbon lifestyles. The organisers’ aim was to highlight the fact that we can save energy – and thus money – with no investment through changing our everyday behaviour  and a climate-friendly lifestyle can be achieved by anyone, and trying to achieve itcan be an efficient community building tool.

The award ceremony of the E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods energy saving competition was held on 14 June 2014 in Budapest organised by GreenDependent Institute. EnergyNeighbourhoods are small groups or communities of 5-8 households saving energy together.

During the six months long competition that promoted ‘smaller carbon footprint’ lifestyles for communities and households, participants had to read their meters (electricity, gas, other heating sources, and water) every month and record it in the online calculator, and had to complete four creative tasks. In the first one they were asked to map their own energy consumption habits and draw up an energy saving plan for both their household and community (or ‘neighbourhood’). After this they had to put together an energy fast or plan a climate-conscious Easter party. Next, the mobility habits of members had to be considered, and finally a board game, a song or some other type of motivational tool was created by communities to help persuade others to lead more energy-efficient lifestyles.

The best performing communities (saving the most and creating the best tasks) reported on their efforts and results at the award ceremony and received their awards that will help them achieve more savings and lead low-carbon lifestyles. The winner group from Egyházasfalu saved an average of 34.6% energy compared to their consumption a year before, while the group coming second from Környe saved 11.2% and the third team from Győr saved 6.6%.

Adult Climate Coordinators and young Energy Hunters all over the country managed and helped the members of the small groups, or EnergyNeighbourhoods, to support each other and to find the best ways to save energy at home.

The organisers paid special attention to keep the carbon footprint of the programme’s events (trainings and the award ceremony) as low as possible. Thus, they arranged for organic, local, fair trade and vegetarian catering, had the events at places that could be reached by public transport or bicycle, and used as little energy as possible. To offset the carbon footprint, 130 native fruit trees will be planted. The fruit trees were purchased from a nursery specializing in saving the genes of native fruit trees.

The presentations as well as the detailed report on the award ceremony with photos, and the best creative tasks of the competition can be found at the project website: www.energiakozossegek.hu.

Dr. Marcel Szabó, Deputy-Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Ombudsman for Future Generations, as patron of the competition greeted the winners and the participants and highlighted the fact that there is no need to give up the important moments of our lives, the solutions and ideas from the EnergyNeighbourhoods help us all realise that by being attentive we can do much to save the environment. Meanwhile our life can be enriched with intellectual and spiritual values, and our overheads reduced.

MOL Group Wins Deloitte’s Green Frog Award

Member News

Once again, Deloitte Hungary handed out the Green Frog Award for the best corporate sustainability report, a prize aspired by as much as thirty-three middle-sized and large enterprises of six countries in the region this year. According to the panel of independent expert judges, the best report in 2013 was prepared by MOL Group. With this award, Deloitte Hungary wishes to encourage companies in the region to pursue an annual reporting practice which is not limited to presenting the sheer financial aspects of their operation.

Competition was strong for the 2013 Central European Sustainability Report Award, commonly called as the Green Frog Award. The judges had a difficult time selecting from reports of the highest standards ever submitted. Companies applying for the award have been focusing increasingly on publishing their sustainability data in a transparent manner and, therefore, many included chronological data or infographics. It is also seen as a positive trend that the number of reports applicants submitted with a verification increased.

This year, Miklós Persányi, Director General of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, Attila Kemény, Deputy Chair of the Board of the Association of Environmental Enterprises, Ida Petrik, Director of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Hungary and Péter Szigeti, Head of Content Development of Kreatív magazine made up the panel of independent expert judges. The experts made their selection from sustainability reports of companies based in Hungary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia and Slovakia.

Outdoing a number of its competitors, this year’s winner of the Green Frog Award committed itself to integrated reporting years ago: MOL has been publishing financial and non-financial indicators hand-in-hand for years now. The company presented its wide-ranging operation portfolio in a clear and well-structured form. The report reflects that it was prepared with respect to industry best practices and benchmarks. The highly informative nature and high-quality graphic design of the winning application also contributed to the decision of the judges.

“Incorporating the principles of corporate sustainability into our daily business practices is essential of the company’s success in the long-term. Our commitment is reflected in our Annual Report, where we publish our sustainability performance within the framework of the financial results. We are pleased that this award also acknowledges our efforts.” – said MOL Group CEO József Molnár.

Apart from the winner, in Hungary among others also MVM Zrt., Zwack Unicum Nyrt., Szerencsejáték Zrt., OTP Bank Nyrt. and Magyar Telekom Nyrt. had high-quality reports, while of foreign companies in the region the judges highlighted the reports of Erste Bank a. d. Novi Sad, Latvenergo AS, NIS a. d. Novi Sad, and aVeolia Voda Czech Republik.

DANUBE BOX national students’ competition: 7th year of support from Coca-Cola Hungary

Member News

Danube Box national students’ competition has announced in 2014 as well. The organiser Global Water Partnership (GWP) Hungary will accept applications till 24 February.

Through this program supported by Coca-Cola Hungary more than 5000 children from hundreds of schools got more familiar with the habitat of the Danube basin. The success of the Danube Box clearly shows us that the for-profit, state and non-profit sectors can cooperate successfully in reaching an important common goal,  in this case: the protection of the Danube.

At Coca-Cola Hungary they believe, that in case of environmental protection, and on the field of protecting the Danube they can be successful only if we manage to make a long-term impact on the attitude of people. This was the reason behind creating the Danube Box comprehensive media set and a national student competition based on this set.

Danube Box is an education material, a comprehensive media set aiming to make children known of the complex world of Danube River, and that humans make a part of its ecological system. Danube Box helps teachers in countries all along the Danube River to motivate children to learn more about the natural and cultural assets of the Danube-region and to protect the river and utilise it in a sustainable way.

The interactive education material prepared by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) for pupils aged 11-19 and their teachers provides not only factual and professional information, but lots of illustrations, worksheets that can be copied, descriptions of role-playing games, indoor and outdoor activities and a section on culture (ever day stories, memories, recipes), and a CD-ROM with an interactive Danube trip. It allows for a playful understanding of the fauna and flora of the Danube Basin and the way the river and its environs contribute to the well-being of communities, while children also make researches and learn by the “hands, the mind and the heart” encouraging them to reflect on their own way of life.

As in the previous years, teams can apply for the competition in two categories: 11-14 years old and 15-19 years old. It has three online turns and a national final for the best 7 teams of each category.

The competition is listed in the official register of national educational contests. All the relevant materials can be downloaded from the website of Danube Box. Also, all schools nationwide can submit their applications on the website: www.danubebox.hu.

Skanska: Green House is Project of the Year

Member News

The prominent jury of 400 real estate professionals from Hungary and the CEE region chose the Skanska building to be the Project of 2013. The Property Investment Forum organized by Portfolio.hu was the ninth year when the real estate market assembled to discuss the main questions and future prospects of the property investment market.

“The Project of the Year title is a very honorable and important one for Skanska as it was adjudicated by those colleagues who are working in this market and have the leading role to define where our business is going. 2013 was a successful year for us. Green House reached 93% occupancy before its first anniversary. We believe that Nordic Light, our coming project on Váci Road, will be as rewarding as Green House”, Grzegorz Strutynski, Managing Director of Skanska Property Hungary, said after receiving the award.

Completed in December 2012, Green House is the greenest commercial development project on the Hungarian office market, and the first one to certify for LEED Platinum with a top score. Tenants of Green House benefit from an ideal combination of sustainability, creativity, work efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The one-phase, category “A”, standalone office development is located in the 13th district of Budapest, next to the Váci Road office corridor, and bordered by Kassák Lajos, Tüzér and Lőportár Streets and Kassák Park. The green office building was carefully planned to create ideal workspaces, while also considering the micro and macro environment. Cutting edge environmental solutions and green technologies were applied in each and every development phase to minimize the building’s environmental footprint, and reduce its energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

The building comprises approximately 20,000 sq m GBA on 7 levels above ground, providing 17,800 sq m GLA and 252 car parking spaces on 3 underground levels. Some of the already-committed tenants are Avis Budget Group, MSCI, ABB and Deichmann.
