DANUBE BOX national students’ competition: 7th year of support from Coca-Cola Hungary

Member News

Danube Box national students’ competition has announced in 2014 as well. The organiser Global Water Partnership (GWP) Hungary will accept applications till 24 February.

Through this program supported by Coca-Cola Hungary more than 5000 children from hundreds of schools got more familiar with the habitat of the Danube basin. The success of the Danube Box clearly shows us that the for-profit, state and non-profit sectors can cooperate successfully in reaching an important common goal,  in this case: the protection of the Danube.

At Coca-Cola Hungary they believe, that in case of environmental protection, and on the field of protecting the Danube they can be successful only if we manage to make a long-term impact on the attitude of people. This was the reason behind creating the Danube Box comprehensive media set and a national student competition based on this set.

Danube Box is an education material, a comprehensive media set aiming to make children known of the complex world of Danube River, and that humans make a part of its ecological system. Danube Box helps teachers in countries all along the Danube River to motivate children to learn more about the natural and cultural assets of the Danube-region and to protect the river and utilise it in a sustainable way.

The interactive education material prepared by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) for pupils aged 11-19 and their teachers provides not only factual and professional information, but lots of illustrations, worksheets that can be copied, descriptions of role-playing games, indoor and outdoor activities and a section on culture (ever day stories, memories, recipes), and a CD-ROM with an interactive Danube trip. It allows for a playful understanding of the fauna and flora of the Danube Basin and the way the river and its environs contribute to the well-being of communities, while children also make researches and learn by the “hands, the mind and the heart” encouraging them to reflect on their own way of life.

As in the previous years, teams can apply for the competition in two categories: 11-14 years old and 15-19 years old. It has three online turns and a national final for the best 7 teams of each category.

The competition is listed in the official register of national educational contests. All the relevant materials can be downloaded from the website of Danube Box. Also, all schools nationwide can submit their applications on the website: www.danubebox.hu.

Member News

The prominent jury of 400 real estate professionals from Hungary and the CEE region chose the Skanska building to be the Project of 2013. The Property Investment Forum organized by Portfolio.hu was the ninth year when the real estate market assembled to discuss the main questions and future prospects of the property investment market.

“The Project of the Year title is a very honorable and important one for Skanska as it was adjudicated by those colleagues who are working in this market and have the leading role to define where our business is going. 2013 was a successful year for us. Green House reached 93% occupancy before its first anniversary. We believe that Nordic Light, our coming project on Váci Road, will be as rewarding as Green House”, Grzegorz Strutynski, Managing Director of Skanska Property Hungary, said after receiving the award.

Completed in December 2012, Green House is the greenest commercial development project on the Hungarian office market, and the first one to certify for LEED Platinum with a top score. Tenants of Green House benefit from an ideal combination of sustainability, creativity, work efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The one-phase, category “A”, standalone office development is located in the 13th district of Budapest, next to the Váci Road office corridor, and bordered by Kassák Lajos, Tüzér and Lőportár Streets and Kassák Park. The green office building was carefully planned to create ideal workspaces, while also considering the micro and macro environment. Cutting edge environmental solutions and green technologies were applied in each and every development phase to minimize the building’s environmental footprint, and reduce its energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.

The building comprises approximately 20,000 sq m GBA on 7 levels above ground, providing 17,800 sq m GLA and 252 car parking spaces on 3 underground levels. Some of the already-committed tenants are Avis Budget Group, MSCI, ABB and Deichmann.

Siemens No. 1 in sustainability

Member News

Siemens has been named the most sustainable capital goods company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), an internationally renowned sustainability ranking published by an association of investors. The company’s top position underscores its uncontested leadership in sustainability across seven industries. Siemens also received this honor last year – the highest that a company can achieve in the DJSI.

In addition, Siemens was once again ranked the most sustainable company in its industry, which is part of the Capital Goods segment. This industry also includes General Electric, Philips and 3M. Siemens further improved its position compared to last year, achieving its best result to date.

“Capturing the No. 1 spot again is a testimony to our success in rigorously and systematically orienting Siemens toward sustainability over the last few years,” said Barbara Kux, member of Siemens’ Managing Board and the company’s Chief Sustainability Officer. The strategy, structure, programs and processes established have proven their value. “We’re now reaping the fruits of our labor – across all fields. In supply chain management, for example, we’ve not only achieved savings in the upper single-digit-billion range over the last years; we’ve also introduced a risk-based supplier qualification, and more than 1,000 suppliers have taken part in our energy-efficiency audits,” she added.

Environmentally friendly technologies are an important, continually growing business field for Siemens. Since 2008, the company has increased the revenue it generates with green products and solutions from €19 billion to €33 billion – or 42 percent of its total revenue today. In fiscal 2012, Siemens’ ecofriendly offerings enabled customers to cut their CO2 emissions by nearly 332 million tons.

Siemens has also achieved a very good rating in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its efforts in the area of CO2 reduction and the battle against climate change. The CDP is supported by more than 722 institutional investors, who together administer assets totaling more than US$87 trillion and are thus in possession of large shares of the world’s top revenue-generating publicly listed companies.
