The new CSR Report is now available

Member News

Since the rebirth of Tungsram in 2018 we have paid great attention to the solution of social issues originating from and related to our activity. We have also organised several CSR events at each of our plants. This is the third year we put together our CSR-related report to introduce our activity. On the one hand in the framework of social engagement we organise important activities (Future Talents, Fittungsram, voluntary programmes). On the other hand with human wellbeing in mind we are trying to find answers for the most pressing challenges of the present – food safety, low-energy and liveable environment, infection prevention. The global development programme of UN sets the structure of sustainable development until 2030 through 17 goals. We relate to 13 of these directly or indirectly by our business, sponsorship-related or other activity. We present our 2020 year through our activities related to social engagement in a broader sense and the UN goals in the English and Hungarian publication called CSR Report 2020. You can access and down-load the report here: https://bit.ly/3kxA7rG A limited number of reports will be soon available in printed form as well.

Households in Pécs, Hungary on the road to a lower carbon footprint lifestyle

Member News

For the second time, the GreenDependent Institute calculated the annual carbon footprint of the members of a community in Hungary: in cooperation with the Pécsimami Association, 21 households around Pécs were included in the survey. According to the project supported by Daikin Hungary, the value of residential CO2 emissions measured during the pandemic was significantly lower than before the COVID-period.

The main goal of the initiative is for the participating households to learn about the size of the carbon footprint associated with their daily lifestyles, which is the largest and most growing part of humanity’s ecological footprint. The GreenDependent Institute and Daikin Hungary assessed the daily carbon emissions of a Hungarian community for the second time. The two organizations measured and calculated the annual household carbon footprint of 21-21 families in Piliscsaba for 2019 and in Pécs for 2020.

The components of the carbon footprint cover 6 consumption areas, the most significant of which are household energy consumption, transport (mobility) and meals, which account for an average of 2/3 of a household’s footprint. The survey focused on four of the 6 areas for which data were collected through a self-report using an online questionnaire.

The average carbon footprint per capita of the families included in the assessment, calculated on the basis of research factors, is 2.74 t CO2 for 2020, which is a very encouraging result and supports the possibility to live on a smaller carbon footprint than an average footprint of 6.2 t CO2e / person / year. In light of this, the target of 2-2.5 t CO2e / capita / year agreed in the context of the Paris Climate Agreement does not seem achievable either.

Most of the average carbon footprint of participating households is accounted for by the energy consumption of their home. This is followed by meals, which are responsible for about a third of families ’footprints, while daily transportation is a little over a sixth of it.

However, it is important to take into account that in the epidemic year 2020, the majority of families completely paused or minimized the number of regular or leisure-related trips and vacations. These two areas accounted for only 2–2 percent of the footprint of participating families; which was much lower than in the case of the Piliscsaba community included in the calculation in the previous year, and also at the value calculated in international studies, which is at least 20% of the average carbon footprint.

In 2020, our lifestyle changed in many ways as a result of the epidemic, which resulted, among other things, in the Earth Overshoot Day being postponed 3 weeks later than in 2019. This was largely due to a decrease in the carbon footprint component, which is also supported by the results of this year’s research, particularly in relation to the travel-related carbon footprint.

Let’s not forget though, that this extraordinary year is over, and in 2021, Earth Overshoot Day was again on July 29, as it was before the pandemic, in 2019. This is why it is important that once one is familiar with the lifestyle emissions, action is being taken in order to reduce them permanently. In connection with GreenDependent’s more than a decade of experience, 10-30% energy savings, thus carbon footprint reduction, can be achieved only by changing consumer behavior without an investment involving technological modernization.

The results of the survey, as well as carbon footprint reduction opportunities through behavior change, retrofits & technology change will be discussed at a dissemination event at 3 p.m. October 14, 2021 in a hybrid form. The physical location is the new office space of Daikin Hungary (1117 Budapest, Alíz u. 3.). We also enable for you to participate virtually. Participation is free, but registration is required. 1,500 children to receive school supplies with the joint collection campaign of the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service and SPAR

Member News

The school supply collection campaign organised by the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta and SPAR Hungary has closed with great success; the inaugural campaign called “Adni Öröm!” (Joy to Give!) raised an outstanding 57,000 school supply items for children in need with shoppers donating 2.2 million HUF through buying donation cards. SPAR added another 1 million HUF to this amount. The money was spent on school supplies which will be delivered to families in need in the coming days.

“We owe a big thank you to our customers who did not hesitate to support our campaign. I can proudly say that 2.2 million HUF have been raised by the customers of the 33 participating INTERSPAR stores and the SPAR online shop by the 5th of September closing date. Between 25-28 August 2021, the volunteers of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta had been collecting school supply donations in the hypermarkets which will be distributed by the colleagues at the charity organisation in the coming days. Our company have matched the donation to the first million to show our commitment and demonstrate how serious we are about our social responsibility. We can make the start of the school year easier for 1,500 children with the help of these donations. We plan to continue this campaign every year in the future as well as extend the number of participating stores,” explained Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.

The Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been a long-term social strategic partner of SPAR, helping people in need for almost 30 years. One of the most successful and longest standing joint initiative is called “Adni Öröm!” (Joy to Give!). The Christmas charity campaign turns 25 this year and they organised the school supply collection campaign between 21 July and 5 September in 2021. This campaign allowed shoppers of the hypermarkets and the SPAR online shop to buy signed donation cards which they then exchanged for real school supplies. Also, the volunteers of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta spent four days in the stores at the end of August collecting school supply donations. As a result of this campaign the organisation collected more than 32,000 notebooks, 18,000 stationary items, 450 pencil cases, 71 school bags and a further 6,000 other creative tools to be delivered to families in need. They also prepare 700 school supply packages from the money they raised with the donation cards.

“We are very glad that we can support 1,500 children to start the school year in September through our school supply collection campaign, with the help of our generous customers and the supermarket chain. The packages will help orphans taken care by the Charity Service, children with foster parents, children living in temporary family homes and children of families in need to have appropriate school supplies to start the school year. We are grateful for the hundreds of volunteers who participated in this campaign all across the country,” said Tamás Romhányi, head of communications at the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta.

The Joy to Give! collection campaign (featuring the school supply donations this year) has been very successful for many years and motivates many shoppers to help. This has enabled the Hungarian Maltese Charity Service and SPAR Hungary to make the lives of thousands of children and families in need easier, before Christmas and also before school begins. According to the organisers of the campaign it is important that the charitable atmosphere that surrounds Christmas gets extended to other areas and periods during the year and motivates people to do good together.

Hungaricool by SPAR is again accepting applications from Hungarian compa-nies

Member News

After two successful rounds, SPAR has announced their third “Hungaricool by SPAR” product competition. As in previous rounds, they are looking for Hungarian products which are either newly-developed or have not yet been sold in retail chains. The company offers mentorship to the successful applicants whose products will be introduced to customers and sold in INTERSPAR stores.

“SPAR has always been an advocate for Hungarian farmers and products, and they support the Hungarian economy and trade market with initiatives like “Hungaricool by SPAR” which is launching this year for the third time. The popular and successful business initiative seeks out newly-developed or already existing Hungarian products which are not very well known, that also comply with sustainability standards. After a professional assessment, up to ten companies or sole traders will be chosen to be represented in INTERSPAR stores. This is a big market and successful applicants will also receive extensive marketing support. The previous two rounds have demonstrated the motivation of up-and-coming producers who were planning on taking their product to market. We strongly believe that this opportunity of a trustworthy partnership will attract many Hungarian producers who make competitive products to test themselves. Our customers will find the best products on the shelves of INTERSPAR stores in 2022,” explained Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.

The deadline for applications for the “Hungaricool by SPAR” 2022 product competition is 9 October 2021. They are hoping for applicants with unique products that are made in Hungary, have no existing distribution capability, and satisfy customer demand.  SPAR Hungary will help the winners of the food and non-food categories to go on the market by utilising 35 INTERSPAR hypermarkets.

The conditions of applications and the details of the tender are accessible on Hungaricool’s website (www.hungaricool.hu). To submit the application, the following form must be filled using the link: www.hungaricool.hu/jelentkezes.

As a strategic partner of RTL Klub’s “Cápák között” business TV show, SPAR will keep looking for contenders for the Hungaricool prize in the next season of the program, however, applicants of Hungaricool don’t need to apply to take part in the TV show to be considered. The experiences of the previous season showed that being on TV brought exceptional reach and fame for the winners of Hungaricool which helped the further success of the companies who have been selected.  ChiliYard is an example of a successful applicant who also appeared on the Cápák között TV show.

SPAR’s professional panel will pre-assess successful tenders. Like the first competition, the jury consist of professionals specialising in food and beverage production, as well as in environmentally friendly technologies or transport. The experienced mentors will make the final decision at the end of the year. There are several important criteria such as innovation and uniqueness, environmentally friendly packaging, and sustainability. When assessing marketable quality, potential customers will be able to taste products and share their opinions.

This year the winner will be notified by 30 December and will be able to attend an in-depth mentoring and training program. Following this mentoring program, the products will be on the shelves of INTERSPAR stores as soon as possible. Judit László, Commercial Manager of Házikó Farm Kft. which produces Funky Forest juices said: ”Hungaricool by SPAR program was a great opportunity for our team. We knew from the beginning that we will have to live up to some high expectations, but the quality of the training was even better than we expected. We received a professional, well-designed training program which helped us overcome some of our issues as a new company and improve our internal processes.”

Áron Bálint, owner of SPAR hypermarkets’ regular supplier Spájz Szörp Kft., emphasised that their lives have fundamentally changed due to the initiative of the retail chain. ”Hungaricool by SPAR is an innovative programme that fills a gap in the practices of retail chains.  It is a unique opportunity for brands like us. We owe them a great gratitude for their efforts. Flexibility, patience, openness, and a good understanding of the mechanisms behind business processes are attributes in a corporate culture which have an important influence on SPAR’s competitiveness.”

BuildEXT ISO 19650 documentation ranked in TOP 5

Member News

We have prepared our documentation so precisely and thoroughly that audit company Simply Cert Institute has ranked it among the TOP 5 ISO documentation of all time and tends to use it later in a marketing campaign in the UK.

In addition to providing a framework for our operations, ISO 19650 certification also has a significant meaning to the market: it grants that we deliver BIM projects in a professional workflow that meets international standards.

From June 2021, BUILDEXT operates according to international BIM certification, and we are also one of the best in Europe in terms of the workflow we use.

“I am very proud of the team, because obtaining such a qualification is a serious achievement in itself. We are not the only ones who are able to do this, but the fact that the audit company ranks us among the bests tells us that Hungary can also provide outstanding performance at the international level in the field of BIM and digital construction. ” – said Csaba Livják, founder and CEO of the company.”

Our company started preparing for the certification within the framework of HEPA Foreign Market Entry Support that we won. It was not a big challenge to comply with the standards, as we have already been designing everything in Revit-based, classified closed BIM for four years. Thus, we were also prepared for the fact that the ISO 19650 standard had meanwhile been tightened up and included in the UKAS (The United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and we had to fulfill an expanded expectations.

However, it came as a surprise that audit company claimed already in Stage 1 that, considering the quality of the documentation submitted by BUILDEXT is among TOP 5 of the certified ones in Europe. Qualification documentation was prepared in Plannerly BIM management platform and after the online audit, we received the following serious recognition.

The audit institute informed our colleagues that they would like to make a promotional footage based on our ISO documentation, the workflow and the usage of the software in order to help and promote ISO 19650 certification in the UK.

The campaign is scheduled to 2022, but it is there is a good chance that BUILDEXT we will appear on different platforms of the audit company earlier.

SPAR launches brand new product line of domestic products

Member News

Traditional, high-quality Hungarian food products will be available later this summer in the stores of the retail chain under the brand name “SPAR HAZAI.SZERETEM”. The company supports sustainable management by promoting Hungarian producers and suppliers.

“Supporting Hungarian producers is an important part of our extensive concept of sustainability. We typically prefer the products of Hungarian family businesses, farmers, and suppliers when it comes to sourcing food products. This has a three-fold advantage; customers can rediscover traditional and unique Hungarian flavours, sourcing from within the country saves time, costs, and petrol, and we also advocate for sustainable management. SPAR will start selling SPAR HAZAI.SZERETEM products from 19 August 2021. We trust that our customers will like this new line of local products and we can further expand our range by building the brand with the involvement of more and more Hungarian farmers and food producers,” said Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.

Customers will find a wide range of these high-quality products in the stores at great prices, and these products will meet any special consumer requirements, too. SPAR Hungary started marketing own-brand products in 1997 and they have been improving their range ever since. The company currently has more than 30 different product groups. Last year, the share of SPAR’s own-brand food products was 29.9%, whilst 18.6% of their chemical products were also own-brand.

The new “SPAR HAZAI.SZERETEM” line is promoting the gastronomical values of Hungary and signals the store chain’s long-term commitment to domestic suppliers. SPAR sources all high-quality, traditional Hungarian food products exclusively from Hungarian producers and suppliers. It offers more than 50 products in this new line including sausages, meat products, pastas, milk, dairy products, syrups, pickled vegetables, and ready made products in SPAR stores, City SPAR supermarkets, INTERSPAR hypermarkets and in SPAR market and SPAR partner stores.

Waste treatment guidance on SPAR own-brand product packaging

Member News

In order to simplify waste collection and make it more efficient, from this summer the company has started to print clear pictograms on the packaging of its own-brand products. This supports customers in understanding which can be put into sorted waste bins and which should go into general waste. In the first period, shoppers at SPAR will see the easily recognisable markings on almost 100 own-brand products, and in the future all the company’s private-label products will carry the icons supporting waste sorting.

“Protecting the natural environment is one of the key areas of the SPAR sustainability programme. Our company has taken many steps, from environmentally-conscious enterprise management and cutting emissions, through modernised waste management to the use of cutting-edge packaging technology. In addition to protecting environmental assets, we are also supporting our increasingly committed customer base by placing awareness-rising pictograms on our own-brand products which have packaging that either goes to sorted waste or to general waste. The informative figures and the brief information on material compositions enable customers to easily and swiftly decide which sorted or general waste bin the packaging should be put to. Following the initial batch of 91 goods, we are planning to place the marking on each of our own-brand food and beverage products,” explained Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.

The company aims to help customers with how to properly handle the packaging of products, how to differentiate and sort them as waste after use. Therefore in 2021, the application of internationally-recognised markings on the packaging of all newly-developed or repackaged domestic own-brand goods will contribute to giving guidance and also recyclability. The pictograms on the packaging of these products help everyone decide what can be collected in sorted bins and what cannot.

In stores of the retail chain, customers can come across five types of packaging: plastic, aluminium, paper and fibre-based covering, glass and a combined packaging solution consisting mainly of aluminium-impregnated cardboard. Today, proper technology enables most materials to be recycled economically, so their sorted collection is therefore extremely important. The own-brand products with the waste management marking are covered by most of the company’s brands – Nelly, S-Budget, SPAR, SPAR BBQ, SPAR free from, SPAR hazai szeretem, SPAR vital, Veggie – including bottled mineral waters, syrups, boil-in-bag rices, pastas, biscuits, yoghurts and ready-made meals.

Consumers can also do a lot to reduce harms to the environment. One way to do this is to properly dispose and selectively collect food packaging waste. By clarifying what is qualified as sorted and general waste, these pictograms provide accurate guidance on what should be done.

Last year, through the joint efforts of Nestlé Hungária Kft. and SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft. a sustainability guidebook was also published, titled “How do I become an environmentally-conscious customer?”. In addition to the basic rules of waste management and sorted waste collection, the booklet provides useful information to readers on how to reduce the amount of packaging and food waste in their households. The booklet also provides accurate descriptions of the meaning of each standardised pictogram and also of what happens to the different types of waste.

This latest environmental initiative from SPAR Hungary encourages customers, as well as the whole society, to make sure that recoverable waste is put in the sorted waste bins. Joint action has yielded very significant results: for example, together with its customers, the retail chain has collected three times as much waste paper as it used for its own-brand products, and it also recycled the material. According to data from 2020, a 94% rate was achieved in the collection and processing of plastic film packaging waste.
